The next his wife heard of him was several hours later, when a fellow solider called to say the 32-year-old Sharma had gravely hurt his neck. Moments later, the family in Palwal, Haryana, got the news of his death in Pakistani shelling in Poonch. Sharma was among the 13 who were killed – 12 of them civilians – when Pakistan, in a sharp escalation on Wednesday, targeted areas near the Line of Control with intense artillery fire. Late Wednesday night, the Indian Army confirmed Sharma’s death in the shelling in Poonch.
