The Delhi Assembly is planning to hire people who can mimic langur’s sounds to tackle the persistent menace of simians entering the Vidhan Sabha premises, officials said on Friday. Loud noises can scare away monkeys. The move comes amid frequent incidents of monkeys straying into the Assembly complex, posing safety risks to legislators, staff and visitors. The Public Works Department (PWD) has floated a tender to deploy trained personnel capable of mimicking langur calls — a method considered effective and humane to scare away monkeys without causing them harm, said the official. The expert will also bring a langur to scare monkeys away. “There were also plans to put langur cutouts, but we have seen that monkeys no longer get scared of them. Expecting an elevated struggle against monkeys for the duration of the second Test in Kanpur, the stadium authorities devised a rather unique plan. Langurs and their handlers have been hired by the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) to end the food-grabbing menace of monkeys at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, the venue of the second Test match between India and Bangladesh. According to venue director Sanjay Kapoor, broadcast camera persons in the stands are at the highest risk of monkeys stealing with their snacks and drinks. “To avoid the terror of monkeys, we have langurs (long-tailed leaf monkeys) to take care of them,” Kapoor said.
