Jeethu Joseph says actors prefer larger-than-life roles: Many are confused after success of ‘Lokah’

New Delhi, Filmmaker Jeethu Joseph says many actors today, whether in Bollywood or the South, are worried about their public image and want roles that present them as larger-than-life heroes, a challenge that he faced with his most recent directorial “Mirage”. Jeethu Joseph says actors prefer larger-than-life roles: Many are confused after success of ‘Lokah’ The filmmaker, known for “Drishyam” franchise and the film “Memories”, said actors are worried that if they take on complex, grey, or negative roles, audiences might reject them. “Not just in Bollywood, many actors here are stuck in their images. That’s the main problem because they’re scared that if they do a negative character, the audience will hate them. “As a director, I always want to do different types of films. So I believe that an actor should do all kinds of characters,” Joseph told PTI in an interview. The filmmaker believes that actors are rushing to do larger-than-life stories, riding on the current wave of pan-Indian blockbusters from Kannada, Telugu, and Malayalam cinema. “After the success of ‘Lokah’, many …

People in north wanted to see larger-than-life heroes like ‘Pushpa’ and ‘KGF’, says Nagarjuna

Mumbai, South superstar Nagarjuna on Friday said movies like “Pushpa” and “KGF” have done better in the northern belt as people there wanted to see larger-than-life heroes. People in north wanted to see larger-than-life heroes like ‘Pushpa’ and ‘KGF’, says Nagarjuna A character like Allu Arjun’s labourer-turned-smuggler Pushparaj from “Pushpa” came as a breath of fresh air to audiences in places like Bihar, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh and that is why the movie earned more in the Hindi language than the original version, Nagarjuna said. “Both the ‘Pushpa’ films made more money in the north than in Telugu. We have seen similar kinds of stories in Telugu before ‘Pushpa’ and it was nothing new for us. Whereas in the north, in Bihar, Punjab and UP, they wanted to see the heroes like Pushpa or Yash’s Rocky from “KGF’ or ‘Baahubali’. “They wanted to see heroes like that. They wanted to see larger-than-life heroes. For Indian people, just living day-to-day itself is very difficult. And when they want to overcome stress by watching movies, they want …

YJHD re-release stirs nostalgia for Bollywood’s romcom era, fans are ‘sick of larger-than-life pan-India films’

YJHD re-release stirs nostalgia for Bollywood’s romcom era, fans are ‘sick of larger-than-life pan-India films’

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone may have multiple career defining projects under their belt but nothing really manages to hit the spot as wholesomely as 2013 blockbuster Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Not only did the film warmly bring the former flames back together for a warm (on screen) reunion, but also gave Gen Z, easily one of their most beloved contemporary classics. Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone’s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani re-release has fans feeling nostalgic and ‘done’ with pan-India wave(Photos: X) A big statement we know, but the proof is in the pudding. The film has officially re-released in select theatre chains today, and if trade reports are to be believed has already sold upwards of 26,000 tickets. Now the number is as much if not more than what some big banner massy, ‘North-meets-South’ action flicks have managed to rake in, in terms of ticket sales (yes, we’re referring to Varun Dhawan and Atlee’s tanking Baby John). Ranbir’s Bunny and Deepika’s Naina’s star-crossed love story, wrapped in the magic of friendship, clearly still has takers, …

OPINION: Are Bollywood fans really missing larger-than-life heroes on-screen?

OPINION: Are Bollywood fans really missing larger-than-life heroes on-screen?

Since the beginning of Hindi Cinema, audiences have perceived actors as larger-than-life figures, and the stardom of Rajesh Khanna, Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, and the three Khans is proof of it. Whether it was the Tragedy King or Angry Young Man, fans have admired powerful characters who bravely fight against the wrong. But, I believe these characters are more diluted in modern-day Bollywood films.  There are more realistic and relatable characters which present a new side of cinema that has impressed the fans. I understand that they represent the evolution of cinema. However, there is a growing void among Bollywood fans as they miss the larger-than-life heroes who once defined the industry. Whether it’s Amitabh Bachchan’s magnetic presence in the 1970s or Sunny Deol, Ajay Devgn, and Sanjay Dutt’s dominance in the 1990s, fans always recall watching those big-screen heroes in awe. Unlike the Western film Industry, on-screen heroes weren’t just relatable in the past; they were untouchable icons, and fans can’t find that in today’s time, which speaks volumes about their distance from many …
