West Asia war: Singapore pips UAE as India’s second largest export destination | Business News

3 min readNew DelhiMay 17, 2026 05:21 AM IST India’s trade flows have begun shifting amid the prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz since March, as traders have begun finding alternate routes to export goods amid disruption in trade with countries in the West Asia region, an analysis of data shared by the Commerce and Industry Ministry showed. The most notable shift in trade routes was seen in the two transshipment hubs that India has free trade agreements (FTA) with – UAE and Singapore. Replacing UAE, Singapore became India’s second largest export market in April, registering a five-fold jump compared to February. The Strait of Hormuz was closed on March 2.  While exports to Singapore surged by 180% in April to $3.20 billion compared to $1.14 billion a year ago, exports to UAE slipped by 36% to $2.18 billion last month compared to $3.43 billion a year ago. The report noted that international migrants made up 3.7 per cent of the world’s population in 2024, a small rise from 2.9 per cent in 1990. The largest migration route globally continues to be from Mexico to the United States, with around 11 million people. This is followed by migration from Afghanistan to Iran with over 3.7 million migrants, and from Syria to Türkiye with more than 3.5 million people, most of them displaced by the Syrian civil war. The migration corridor between Russia and Ukraine ranked fourth globally. The report also placed the India-United Arab Emirates and India-United States routes among the world’s top 10 migration corridors in 2024. New Delhi: China has overtaken the US to emerge as India’s largest trading partner in 2025-26, with bilateral trade reaching USD 151.1 billion, while the country’s trade deficit with Beijing widened to USD 112.16 billion during the period, government data showed. India’s exports to China rose 36.66 per cent to USD 19.47 billion during the last fiscal year, while imports increased 16 per cent to USD 131.63 billion. The trade deficit swelled to an all-time high of USD 112.6 billion in 2025-26 as against USD 99.2 billion in 2024-25. On the other hand, the country’s outbound shipments to the US grew marginally 0.92 per cent to USD 87.3 billion during the last fiscal year, while imports increased 15.95 per cent to USD 52.9 billion. Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar laid the foundation stone for the KSRTC-SIMCO project on Friday (February 20, 2026), describing it as a milestone in Kerala’s vehicle recycling sector. The Edappal RVSF will cater to the districts of Palakkad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Idukki. Similar centres are planned for northern and southern Kerala in collaboration with Steel Industries Kerala Ltd (SILK). Mr. Ganesh Kumar said the project would help curb illegal and environmentally harmful vehicle scrapping practices in the State. The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday launched ECINET, a one-stop digital platform for all election-related information and services, at the India International Conference on Democracy and Election Management (IICDEM) 2026. The three-day conference, running from January 21-23, is being held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. ECINET was conceptualised by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Shri Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi, with its development announced in May 2025. Speaking at the launch, CEC Kumar said the platform has been built in strict compliance with the law and is available in 22 scheduled languages and English. He invited election management bodies (EMBs) worldwide to collaborate with India on developing similar platforms for their countries, tailored to local laws and languages.
