The southwest monsoon has become active over the state under the influence of favourable wind patterns and a strong moisture flow from the Bay of Bengal, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata. For South Bengal, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next few days. Districts including East and West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, Purulia and Bankura are likely to experience thunderstorms with wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph. By 5.48 pm on June 21, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Pune’s main weather station, Shivajinagar, had recorded 18.30 mm of rain, and the grey clouds in the sky held out a promise of more. The highest rainfall recorded on Sunday was in NDA, which was drenched with 78.5 mm. Hadapsar received 8.5 mm, Pashan 4mm and Lavale experienced some relief, with 1.5 mm of rain, and Lohegaon received only around 0.6 mm. Chinchwad and a few other areas have to wait a while longer, as there was zero rain recorded here. The IMD bulletin stated that favourable meteorological conditions with strong moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal and intense thunderstorm activity is set to sweep across the state till March 21. The impact was particularly visible in north Bengal even as Coochbehar reported hailstorms while Jalpaiguri witnessed heavy to extremely heavy rain at few places. Oodlabari Tea Estate (Jalpaiguri) recorded 22cm of rain, being the highest in the region. South Bengal received light to moderate rain as of Thursday. Sharp showers triggered by Cyclone Ditwah continue to lash several parts of Tamil Nadu, while three persons have been killed in rain-related deaths, the state government said. The cyclone is expected to move parallel to the coastline of northern parts of the state and neighbouring Puducherry in the next 24 hours, the weather office said today. With heavy rainfall pounding Cauvery delta districts in the state, Ramanathapuram and Nagapattinam districts bore the brunt. Heavy rains lashed Baramati and Indapur tehsils in Pune on Sunday, resulting in a flood-like situation in several areas, prompting the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to deploy specialised teams on the urgent request of the district collector, officials said, reported news agency PTI. Baramati tehsil received 83.6 millimetres of rain during the day, while the figure was 35.7 mm for Indapur, they added. Pune (Rural) Superintendent of Police Sandip Singh Gill said a stretch of the Pune-Solapur highway near Indapur remained closed for about two hours due to waterlogging but traffic resumed after the water receded, reported PTI.
