There has been a surge in activity, especially around the Bengali camps in Kerala, where Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives are scouting for persons to undertake terror attacks, officials say. Lashkar-e-Taiba militant killed in south Kashmir gunfight

A Lashkar-e-Taiba militant was killed on Friday in a gunfight with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir`s southern Shopian district, police said. According to the police, the slain militant was involved in the abduction and killing of Army officer Lieutenant Ummer Fayaz in 2017. A police spokesperson said that acting on “specific information” about presence of a militant in Chotigam village of the south Kashmir district, a cordon and search operation was launched in the early hours. As the security forces approached the suspected spot, the Lashkar-e-Taiba militant fired upon the security forces, which was retaliated, leading to a gunfight, the spokesman said. In the ensuing gunfight, a militant was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of the encounter, he said. The spokesman identified the slain Lashkar-e-Taiba militant as Bilal Ahmed Bhat, a resident of Chek Cholan. Bhat was involved in several cases, including the killing of local Army personnel Ummer Fayaz, a resident of Sudsan Kulgam. A police official said security forces had launched a cordon and search operation at Munjh Marg in Zainapora area of Shopian following information about the presence of militants there. The search operation later turned into an encounter, he said. A police spokesman said three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) ultras were killed in the exchange of firing with the security forces. “03 #terrorists linked with proscribed #terror outfit LeT killed. The chargesheet against the said terrorist was produced by police before the Court. (Representational) Budgam, Jammu And Kashmir: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday filed a chargesheet against a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist, in a case related to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. According to Budgam Police, the Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorist was arrested on January 20, 2022, Chadoora area of the district with arms and ammunition including one Pistol. “On 20.01.2022, upon specific information, Budgam Police arrested an active terrorist of the proscribed outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba in the Chadoora area of the district along with arms and ammunition including one Pistol,” said police. The arrested terrorist was identified as Jahangir Ahmad Naikoo, a resident of Memander Village in Shopian. During the course of the investigation, offences under Sections 20, 23 and 38 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act were established against the said arrested terrorist. “The chargesheet against the said terrorist was produced by police before the Court after obtaining the necessary sanction from the competent authority,” said police.
