Kerala’s Opposition Leader V D Satheesan | Photo Credit: THULASI KAKKAT Kerala’s Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan on Tuesday (January 20, 2026) said the policy address made by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar in the Assembly was a document filled with “half-truths and fake claims” of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government. Addressing a press conference, he said the government’s “failures can be read in between the lines” of the policy document. Mr. Satheesan said he agreed with the government’s views regarding “the omissions and the additions” made by the Governor to the policy address, as the Constitution stipulates that the Governor has to read the address approved by the Cabinet without any changes. However, regarding Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s move to correct the Governor’s address, Mr. Satheesan said the Chief Minister went on to counter the Governor “only because elections are approaching”. Pinarayi Vijayan will lead LDF in Assembly polls battle: CPM | India News

THE CPI(M) on Sunday made clear that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will continue to lead the party-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the upcoming Assembly elections. Vijayan was the face of the LDF in the 2016 and 2021 elections, which were marked by massive verdict in favour of the alliance. After the party central committee meeting, which reviewed the party’s poll preparations in five states, CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby told reporters, “The Chief Minister, who has led a government that implemented unparalleled developmental initiatives in the history of Kerala, will be leading the political fight. In the LDF, he is the most prominent, efficient and popular leader. At the same time, leaders of the LDF allies will also be in lead roles.’’ “In the Congress-led UDF, there are many leaders eying the Chief Minister’s post. The LDF will have a collective leadership and Vijayan will be leading that collective in the elections. On the question of who will be the Chief Minister if the LDF is voted to power, the party will decide …

The UDF candidate, K.H. Sudheer Khan, won the seat by a margin of 83 votes. The UDF candidate secured a total of 2,902 votes, while LDF candidate N.A. Noushad of CPI(M) polled 2,819 votes. BJP candidate Sarvashakthipuram Binu came third with 2,437 votes. LDF rebel and former ward councillor N.A. Rasheed polled 118 votes. Hung council poses challenge for LDF in standing committee polls in Kozhikode Corporation

With the elections for members of the various standing committees and their chairpersons scheduled within a week, the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the Kozhikode Corporation will have to engage in political manoeuvring to fill these positions. With a hung council, where the LDF has only 35 of the 76 seats—four short of a simple majority—the United Democratic Front (UDF), with 28 seats, and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), with 13 seats, which form the opposition, will have a major say in the process. Elections to the eight standing committees—Finance, Development, Welfare, Health, Public Works, Town Planning, Tax Appeal, and Education & Sports—are scheduled to be held from January 5 to 7. The selection of members is expected to prove tricky this time, as the LDF cannot have a majority in all the committees and will have to accommodate more members from the UDF and at least one member from the BJP in each committee. While the LDF enjoyed a simple majority and a stronger position in 2010, the situation is murkier this …

LDF regains Pullur-Periya panchayat in Kerala’s Kasaragod after tie-break decided by lots

Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate C.K. Sabita was elected president of the Pullur-Periye grama panchayat in Kasaragod, Kerala, on Monday (December 29, 2025) after the winner was decided by a draw of lots, ending weeks of uncertainty over the local body’s leadership. The draw of lots became necessary as both the LDF and the United Democratic Front (UDF) secured nine votes each in the election. The tie occurred after an elected member, though present in the meeting, abstained from voting. Following the draw conducted by the authorities as per the rules, the verdict went in favour of the LDF with Ms. Sabita defeating UDF candidate Usha N. Nair. With Ms. Sabita’s election, the LDF has regained control of the panchayat. Kerala local body polls: In Kozhikode Corporation, UDF plots a comeback in LDF bastion of half a century

Kerala local body polls: In Kozhikode Corporation, UDF plots a comeback in LDF bastion of half a century

A high-stakes electoral combat is brewing in the Kozhikode Corporation for the civic body elections on December 11, over a year after the city was bestowed India’s first UNESCO City of Literature title. Nevertheless, the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) is leveraging this status in the political arena, employing the achievement even as a counter to the anti-incumbency narratives of the rival Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). An additional division has been created this time, taking the council strength from 75 to 76, and prompting all three fronts to fine-tune their strategies ward by ward in the tightly contested urban landscape. Buoyed by its long-standing grip over the corporation for around 45 years, the LDF enters the race with a clear advantage: they represent four assembly constituencies in the city, and two of their representatives are State Ministers. Despite Congress leader M.K. Raghavan being elected four times as an MP from the region and scoring well even in the traditional Left divisions, the UDF has been unable to get …

BJP accuses Kerala’s LDF govt of violating model code of conduct, sees political motive behind distribution of pension forms

BJP accuses Kerala’s LDF govt of violating model code of conduct, sees political motive behind distribution of pension forms

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Kerala general secretary S. Suresh on Tuesday (November 25, 2025) accused the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government of violating the model code of conduct in the run-up to the local body elections by attempting to influence voters through “deceptive and politically motivated tactics”. Addressing a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram, the BJP leader criticised the ongoing circulation of Sthree Suraksha pension forms, alleging that it was part of a deliberate effort to sway voters. He also claimed that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] was convening ward-level meetings of social welfare pension beneficiaries ahead of the polls. “Welfare pensions are not acts of generosity from the Chief Minister or the CPI(M). They are the rightful entitlement of poor beneficiaries. The government had delayed pension payments for years, maligned pensioners who protested, and is now using welfare schemes for electoral gains,” he alleged. Mr. Suresh said that using official machinery to “coerce and lure voters” amounted to “manipulation” of the election process, and urged the State Election Commission to take immediate action. …
