India’s Wrestling legacy at the Commonwealth Games: A look back

India’s Wrestling legacy at the Commonwealth Games: A look back

For nearly a century, wrestling has been one of India’s most successful sports at the Commonwealth Games, producing champions, unforgettable moments and a steady stream of medals. The sport has contributed 114 medals to India’s overall Commonwealth Games tally, including 49 gold, 38 silver and 27 bronze medals, making it India’s most successful discipline at the Games. India also ranks second in the all-time Commonwealth Games wrestling medal table, behind only Canada. India’s Commonwealth Games wrestling story began in 1934 when Rashid Anwar won the country’s first-ever Commonwealth Games medal with a bronze at the British Empire Games in London. Since then, generations of wrestlers have turned the event into one of India’s biggest medal-hunting grounds. However, that remarkable legacy will not continue at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. The upcoming edition, scheduled from July 23 to August 2, will feature only 10 sports after organisers opted for a scaled-down programme, with wrestling among the disciplines dropped from the roster. As India prepares for a Commonwealth Games without one of its strongest sports, here’s a …

The nightingale who sang in 20 languages: The life and legacy of S Janaki | Telugu News

S Janaki, the playback singer whose voice carried South Indian cinema through six decades and roughly 20 languages, died on Saturday at Apollo BGS Hospitals in Mysuru after suffering multiple cardiac arrests. She was 88. For an artist known as “Janaki Amma” to generations of listeners who never met her, the tributes flowing in today read less like obituaries and more like a chorus of gratitude, for a voice that, as one composer once put it, could sound like a child, a bride or a grandmother in a single song. Born Sistla Janaki on 23 April 1938 in Pallapatla, a village in Guntur district of what is now Andhra Pradesh, Janaki grew up with little in the way of formal classical training. Her early grounding came from a local nadaswaram player, Paidiswamy, who noticed her talent when she was still a child performing on makeshift stages. She got her first real public break in 1956, winning second place in an All India Radio light-music competition and receiving her prize from the President of India, a …

Revisiting India’s glorious Badminton legacy

Revisiting India’s glorious Badminton legacy

For nearly six decades, badminton has been one of India’s most successful sports at the Commonwealth Games. From Dinesh Khanna’s first medal in 1966 to India’s six-medal haul in Birmingham 2022, the sport has delivered some of the country’s most memorable moments at the Games. However, in 2026, badminton will not be part of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The decision comes after the original host, the Australian state of Victoria, withdrew from hosting the Games in 2023 due to financial concerns. Scotland later stepped in and opted for a smaller, more cost-effective edition of the Games, leading to the exclusion of several sports, including badminton. For India, the absence of badminton is a major setback. At the 2022 Commonwealth Games alone, Indian shuttlers won six medals, including three golds. Over the years, badminton has consistently been one of India’s strongest medal-producing sports at the Games. The beginning of India’s Commonwealth badminton journey India’s Commonwealth Games badminton story began in 1966 at Kingston, Jamaica. In the very first edition that India competed in, Dinesh …

100 years of Mehboob: A legacy that lives on

Opposite Aspinwall House in Fort Kochi stands the office of the Mehboob Memorial Orchestra — a sanctuary of memories dedicated to H Mehboob, Kerala’s beloved singer who never failed to delight his audiences, on the stage and off it.  Mehboob’s legacy remains intact here — old photographs hang on the walls and the stage in the central hall showcases paintings of him and singer Mohammed Rafi (Mehboob idolised the legendary singer). Members of the “club”, as they call it, get together here every Friday and offer their modest stage to aspiring musicians. “This is how we keep the spirit of his music alive,” says K A Hussain, secretary and one of Mehboob Memorial Orchestra’s (MMO) earliest members. The building itself is over 130 years old, adds Hussain.  Seated in a chair beside the window overlooking the street and the ancient raintree, Hussain talks about Mehboob, curating his words with care. “Bhai was one of a kind — a true maverick. No one could guess what he had up his sleeve and that was part of …
