The rebel camp, led by Ritabrata and fellow expelled MLA Sandipan Saha, submitted letters of support before the Speaker, comfortably crossing the two-thirds threshold required under the anti-defection law. “Our claim has been accepted by the Speaker,” Ritabrata said. West Bengal government formation LIVE: Amit Shah arrives in Kolkata for BJP legislature party meet to elect new CM

The BJP legislature party is scheduled to meet in Kolkata on Friday (May 8, 2026) in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to formally elect its leader, with Suvendu Adhikari emerging as the frontrunner to become the party’s first Chief Minister in West Bengal. The BJP registered a historic victory in the just-held Assembly elections, ending the TMC’s 15-year rule and dealing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee one of the biggest setbacks of her political career. Though the BJP has not officially announced its Chief Ministerial choice, Mr. Adhikari has emerged as the frontrunner after securing two of the most politically significant victories — retaining Nandigram, where he defeated Ms. Banerjee in 2021, and now wresting Bhabanipur, long regarded as the TMC supremo’s pocket borough. – PTI Disclaimer: We do not own any of the content, ideas, images, or text presented here. The Constitution (Seventy-third Amendment) Act, 1992 and The Constitution (Seventy-fourth Amendment) Act, 1992 took effect in 1993. They reserved 33% of the seats for women in Panchayati Raj institutions and urban local bodies, respectively. What prompted these Acts then, and what was the nature of political debates at the time? Here is a brief history. From committees, to states, to country First, it is important to understand the significance of the 73rd and 74th Constitutional amendments. Before these Acts, India’s Constitution …
