Jamie’s Brick Jams creates functional electric motor with LEGO and basic parts

Jamie from the YouTube channel Jamie’s Brick Jams has built a fully working electric motor using mostly ordinary LEGO bricks, a handful of basic electronic parts, and simple electromagnetic principles. No advanced motor modules. No complex control boards. Just magnets, copper wire, a transistor, and a 9-volt battery.  Through this project, Jamie shows that the core ideas behind modern machines can be understood with simple components. Lego announces Pokémon sets are coming next year

Lego has announced that another popular gaming franchise is getting the plastic brick treatment. On its website, the company has teased that Lego Pokémon sets are “coming soon,” but also says the sets won’t arrive until 2026 — which isn’t as soon as we’d hoped. There are no details yet on specific sets or which characters will be available in Lego form, but the teaser does include a peek at Pikachu’s tail built from yellow bricks. This life-size Lego McLaren P1 can hit almost 40MPH

That eclipses the 3,893 pieces that go into building Lego’s 1:8-scale McLaren P1 model. The company says the full-scale version used 393 types of Technic components, including 11 specifically manufactured for the replica. That would make it hard to build a copy yourself, but you’d also struggle to find the time. Lego says it took 6,134 hours to design and plan its P1 and 2,210 hours to assemble it. Lego opted to build with Technic components instead of its standard bricks as it allowed the company’s designers to recreate the curves of the hypercar and incorporate some flex into the P1 replica’s body, mimicking the performance of the carbon fiber used to make the real thing. A metal frame beneath the body provides enough support for someone to actually drive Lego’s McLaren P1 replica.Image: Lego The P1 replica isn’t entirely made from Lego. Underneath the body is a steel frame, and it rolls on the same tires and wheels as the real thing so that it’s strong enough to support a human driver. There’s also …

The man who put Doom in a Lego brick is now playing it on a volumetric voxel display

In 2022, I introduced you to James Brown, the Weta Workshop graphics engineer whose hobby is building amazing displays. Now, he’s built a crystal ball filled with shimmering, spinning volumetric light — and of course he’s playing Doom on it. But not just any Doom. Voxel Doom, where every dot of the game’s graphics lives in 3D space, just like the dots of the volumetric display he’s created. As he explains on YouTube, the physical illusion is fairly simple: “It’s like a hologram fan, but instead of spinning a 1D strip to make a 2D image, it spins a 2D panel to make a 3D image.” On his Mastodon, he breaks it down a bit more with visual aids: Brown’s been working on this for over a year now: if I’m not mistaken, he introduced the project in August 2023 by channeling his inner Doc Brown, saying “If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 300rpm you’re going to see some serious shit.” But he’s since discovered it needs to spin a good bit …
