Kane scores as Bayern deliver comeback romp over Leipzig

Kane scores as Bayern deliver comeback romp over Leipzig

Harry Kane scored his 21st goal of the Bundesliga season as Bayern Munich came from behind to win 5-1 at RB Leipzig on Saturday. The victory restores Bayern’s 11-point lead atop the ladder over second-placed Borussia Dortmund, while continuing their record-breaking campaign. Unbeaten Bayern have dropped just four points on their way to a record-equalling tally of 50 after 18 games. Bayern’s total of 71 goals scored is also a record at this stage of a German league season. Leipzig took a first-half lead through Romulo, but Bayern kicked into gear after the break, Serge Gnabry, Kane, Jonathan Tah, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Michael Olise all scoring. Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said Leipzig were “twice as good as we were” in the opening half, adding “but in the second-half my god, the boys delivered. “We weren’t afraid and we really went for it.” Leipzig goalscorer Romulo said “we played 75 minutes really on top, then I don’t know what happened, we turned off our minds. We have to learn something out of that.” Leipzig were strong …

RB Leipzig Miss Out On Champions League For Only The Second Time In Nine Seasons

RB Leipzig Miss Out On Champions League For Only The Second Time In Nine Seasons

RB Leipzig’s top-four hopes were dashed with a goalless draw at Werder Bremen on Saturday as Holstein Kiel and Bochum were relegated from the Bundesliga after both fell to home defeats. Leipzig had only missed the Champions League once in eight seasons since their debut promotion in 2017 but struggled against a Bremen side pushing for a return to Europe after a 15-year absence. Leipzig’s Xavi Simons went closest to scoring, hitting the post with 68 minutes gone and forcing a save from goalie Michael Zetterer two minutes later.  The result means Jurgen Klopp, the new football chief at owners Red Bull, will oversee his first off-season without the promise of Champions League football. Leipzig need to beat Stuttgart in their final match to have any hope of reaching the Europa League, while Bremen’s European hopes are now purely mathematical given their poor goal difference. Heidenheim’s 3-0 win at Union Berlin on Saturday, thanks to a brace from Adrian Beck and a Jan Schoeppner goal, secured at least the relegation play-off spot for …

Harry Kane’s First League Title Still Not Sealed As Bayern Munich Held To 3-3 Draw By RB Leipzig

Harry Kane’s First League Title Still Not Sealed As Bayern Munich Held To 3-3 Draw By RB Leipzig

Bayern Munich and Harry Kane’s German Bundesliga title party was delayed by at least a day after RB Leipzig’s Yussuf Poulsen scored a stoppage-time equaliser in a 3-3 home draw on Saturday. With Kane sitting in the stands due to a yellow card suspension, Bayern fell two down by half-time, Leipzig scoring twice in teaming rain in Saxony through Benjamin Sesko and Lucas Klostermann.  Bayern then scored twice in 46 seconds through Eric Dier and Michael Olise to level things up with just under 30 minutes remaining. Leroy Sane looked to have completed the comeback and clinch the title, hitting an unstoppable shot from the right of goal on the 83rd-minute mark.  But Poulsen, subbed on with 30 minutes to go, chipped the ball over Urbig in the fifth minute of stoppage time to snatch a draw.  The result keeps Bayer Leverkusen’s slim chances of defending their Bundesliga title alive.  Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen play at Freiburg on Sunday and need to win their three remaining games, with Bayern, who have a significant goal …

Harry Kane Double Takes Bayern Munich Past Union Berlin, Borussia Dortmund Beat Leipzig

Harry Kane Double Takes Bayern Munich Past Union Berlin, Borussia Dortmund Beat Leipzig

Harry Kane scored twice and set up another as Bayern Munich moved three points clear at the top of the German Bundesliga with a 3-0 home win over Union Berlin on Saturday. The England captain put Bayern ahead from the spot on 15 minutes after Union’s Benedict Hollerbach brought down Michael Olise on the edge of the box. Kane turned provider just before half-time, tapping the ball into Kingsley Coman‘s path, the France forward blasting in over Union goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow.  Kane added another after 51 minutes, eagerly getting to a loose ball inches ahead of teammate Jamal Musiala to complete his brace. Despite two consecutive Champions League losses at Aston Villa and Barcelona, Bayern have now scored 16 without conceding in their past four games against German opposition.  “We’ve not started the Champions League well, so the pressure is on in every Champions League game now,” Kane said.  “I think if we use the confidence that we’ve played the last few games with, we can cause any team a lot of problems.” …

Victor Boniface Sends Bayer Leverkusen Past Eintracht Frankfurt; RB Leipzig Go Top

Victor Boniface Sends Bayer Leverkusen Past Eintracht Frankfurt; RB Leipzig Go Top

Victor Boniface’s 72nd-minute goal was the difference as Bayer Leverkusen beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 at home, while RB Leipzig won 2-0 at Mainz to go top of the table. Omar Marmoush sent Frankfurt 1-0 up, before Robert Andrich equalised for the champions midway through the first half and Boniface completed the comeback in the second period. Leverkusen were given an early chance when Amine Adli was felled in the box, sending Boniface to the spot after a long VAR review.  The Nigerian’s shot, too soft and central, was gobbled up by Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp.  Just five minutes later, the referee was sent to the video screen again, this time finding a penalty for Frankfurt, with Andrich lightly touching Marmoush’s foot.  Marmoush showed Boniface how it is done, blasting a low shot left to give the visitors the lead on 16 minutes. The Egyptian now has an incredible nine goals and five assists in just seven league games this season. Andrich made good on his error soon afterwards, combining expertly with Adli and …

Leipzig Into Top Four As Xavi Simons And Lois Openda Slay Cologne

A goal and an assist from Xavi Simons and a Lois Openda brace helped RB Leipzig thump Cologne 5-1 away on Friday to leapfrog Borussia Dortmund into the top four. Simons produced yet another masterclass as Leipzig’s attacking fulcrum in midfield while showcasing his understanding with fellow summer arrival Openda, who lifted his league goal tally to 19 this season. Simons, who laid on two goals in a 6-0 procession when these teams met earlier in the season, now has 11 assists and seven goals in 25 games this season. Simons joined Leipzig on a season-long loan in summer from parent club Paris Saint-Germain. Leipzig have been increasingly reliant on the Dutchman this season, with coach Marco Rose saying this week he was “very optimistic” the 20-year-old would stay beyond the season. Leipzig defender David Raum, who was named in Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany squad on Thursday, told DAZN: “Of course it was fun in the end, but it was hard work. “We didn’t take our chances in the first half but in the second half …

Real Madrid ‘Suffer’ In Leipzig Draw To Reach Champions League Quarters

Real Madrid scraped through into the Champions League quarter-finals with a 1-1 second-leg draw against RB Leipzig on Wednesday, progressing 2-1 on aggregate. The record 14-time champions were far below their best but did just enough over the two legs of the last-16 clash to edge out their Bundesliga opponents. Despite Leipzig shading the game, Vinicius Junior opened the scoring in the 65th minute after being set up well by Jude Bellingham. Willi Orban quickly levelled for the visitors but they could not find a second goal to force extra-time at the Santiago Bernabeu. Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said his team suffered and did not approach the game well mentally. “We played badly, with little intensity, with worries … the psychological aspect conditioned our game a lot,” Ancelotti told Movistar. “We played against an opponent with quality, who had nothing to lose, and we had the brakes on from start to finish — we suffered, but the important thing was to get to the quarter-finals.” Ancelotti warned his players before the game they needed to …

Harry Kane’s Injury Time Goal Saves Bayern Munich Against RB Leipzig

Harry Kane scored two goals in the second-half, including an injury time winner, to snatch Bayern Munich a 2-1 home win over RB Leipzig on Saturday, ending the side’s worst run since 2015. Bayern had lost three matches in a row for the first time in nine years before the club announced this week that coach Thomas Tuchel would leave in the summer. Bayern captain Manuel Neuer told Sky “it might seem a bit like the good old Bayern luck, but we deserved to win today.” The win reduced the gap to leaders Bayer Leverkusen to eight points with 11 games left. Neuer said Tuchel’s exit “cast a bad light on us as players, that we weren’t able to make it work with a top coach like Thomas Tuchel.  “It’s our mistake. We want to keep things going professionally until the end.” Kane broke the deadlock midway through the first half but Leipzig hit back with 20 remaining minutes, Benjamin Sesko equalising for the visitors.  With Bayern in danger of conceding further ground …

Bayern Munich’s Thomas Tuchel Gamble To Face Immediate Test Against RB Leipzig

Struggling Bayern Munich’s shock decision to part ways with coach Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season will be put to the test in Saturday’s clash with RB Leipzig. On Wednesday, Bayern announced Tuchel would leave the Bavarian capital in the summer, seemingly staking out a middle ground between firing the coach immediately or pledging to stick with him despite poor recent results. The Bayern bosses made the call after Sunday’s 3-2 loss to Bochum left them eight points behind Xabi Alonso‘s unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen, with 12 matches to play this season.  Bayern hopes the announcement will galvanise their star-studded squad, many of whom reportedly fell out with the coach.  Bayern have already set their sights on Alonso, who played for three seasons in Munich, as Tuchel’s replacement.  The Tuchel announcement will allow Bayern to up their pursuit of the in-demand coach, continuing their tried and tested approach of strengthening themselves by weakening a direct rival.  Alonso on Thursday told reporters he had “nothing new to say” about the rumours, saying it …

Dazzling Brahim Diaz Sends Real Madrid To Victory In Leipzig

An incredible solo goal from Brahim Diaz secured Real Madrid a 1-0 win away at RB Leipzig in Tuesday’s Champions League last 16 first leg. Leipzig were energetic but wasteful early, while Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin made numerous saves after the hosts controversially had a goal disallowed for offside. The German club were made to pay early in the second half when Diaz opened the scoring. Drafted into the side in place of the injured Jude Bellingham, Diaz danced past three Leipzig defenders before curling an inch-perfect shot inside the far post.  “I’m intuitive,” said Diaz of the goal. “I saw Vini (Vinicius Junior) and wanted to give it to him, but in the end I took the shot. “It was a nice goal.” Real midfielder Toni Kroos praised his teammate, telling Amazon Prime “a piece of individual skill decided the game.  “If we’re honest, it could have gone in either direction.” The win was Real Madrid’s seventh in seven games this Champions League campaign and puts them in prime position to make …
