File photo | Photo Credit: PTI On the eve of Goa Liberation Day, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday (December 18, 2024) honoured the family members of those who sacrificed their lives during the movement to end Portuguese colonial rule in the coast State. Talking to reporters after the felicitation function, the Chief Minister said the State government had paid tribute to its martyrs whose family members were presented with a certificate of honour and monetary benefits. The Goa Liberation Day is celebrated on December 19 every year to mark the success of ‘Operation Vijay’ undertaken by the armed forces in 1961 to liberate the State from Portugal. Mr. Sawant said he had the honour of visiting and felicitating the “ veerpatni of martyr Karnail Singh Benipal in Haryana whose contribution to the struggle remains etched in our hearts”. The families of several freedom fighters were also honoured on Wednesday. Home Ministry declares Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council ‘unlawful association’ for five years – India TV

New Delhi: In a significant development, the Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday declared Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) along with all its factions, wings and front organisations as an unlawful association with immediate effect from the November 16, 2024 for a period of five years. The Home Ministry in its notification dated November 13 stated that HNLC and its factions engage in activities that endanger India’s sovereignty, including efforts for secession, extortion, and ties with other insurgent groups.  The development comes as the HNLC is accused of involvement in 48 criminal cases, including explosive attacks, over recent years. Earlier, the Meghalaya government had recommended the ban, which the MHA implemented under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act of 1967.  Source link

A notification released by the Ministry stated that Hyderabad remained under the rule of the Nizams for 13 months after India gained independence on August 15, 1947, and did not attain independence until later.
