AI-generated image used for representation The Supreme Court has clarified that a driving licence stops being valid immediately after its expiry if it is not renewed, bringing an end to any assumption of automatic extension under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. A bench of Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and S. V. N. Bhatti said that after the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 came into force, a licence holder becomes legally unfit to drive from the very next day after the licence expires if renewal has not been done. The court said this creates a “legal disability” to drive. Explaining the current legal position, the bench noted that the amended law does not provide any grace period after the expiry of a licence. Earlier, before the 2019 amendment, the Act allowed licences to remain valid for an additional 30 days after expiry. After Goa nightclub fire: Capital to soon permit third party audit for fire licence, says CM | Delhi News

Days after a blaze ripped through a nightclub in Goa, claiming at least 25 lives, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday announced that Delhi will soon permit a third-party audit for fire licence and also implement a single-window licensing regime for hotels and restaurants within the Capital. Further, the government also directed the fire department on Wednesday to carry out an inspection of restaurants, hotels and clubs, with the officers asked to submit a compliance report of the order. Elaborating on a third-party audit, Gupta explained that such an audit would be a key step towards ease of doing business for hoteliers and restaurant owners. She made the announcement at the inauguration of ‘Viksit Delhi, Viksit Tourism & Hospitality: Together Towards a Viksit Bharat’ summit. Subsequently, steps and measures would be initiated to facilitate issuance of other licenses from MCD, DDA, and the Delhi government through a single-window system, which are required by the hotels and restaurants, she said. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has proposed a mandatory blanket licence that will give AI developers the leeway to train their models on all lawfully accessed copyrighted content in India without needing individual permissions from creators. In return, people who own this content will receive statutory remuneration through a new central collecting entity, according to a government working paper on generative AI and copyright. DPIIT plan: Licence for AI training on copyrighted works DPIIT has invited feedback within 30 days. A second working paper on whether AI-generated content itself can get copyright will be released later. The committee behind this proposal was formed by DPIIT, under the commerce & industry ministry, on April 28. It was tasked with analysing the legal and policy issues around AI and copyright, and checking whether India’s current Copyright Act, 1957 is adequate for dealing with these challenges. Days after two pedestrians were killed in a hit-and-run in West Delhi’s Moti Nagar, a 20-year-old youth was arrested on Friday for allegedly driving the car involved in the accident, police said. Police said the accused, Sumit Kumar, a resident of Sonipat in Haryana, was arrested during the investigation under sections 281 and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The case pertains to the incident on Wednesday in which a car hit two men.The car was later found abandoned at the spot. The two men injured in the crash—a 48-year-old resident of Anand Parbat and a 74-year-old man from Zakhira — succumbed to their injuries during treatment at RML Hospital. According to police, the car’s owner–Sanjay Kumar—appeared before investigators and stated that his son, Sumit, had been driving the car at the time of the accident. Further, police also said that Sumit admitted to driving the vehicle and was subsequently apprehended.
