Why All England Open winner Shi Yuqi is not the stereotypical Chinese champion | Badminton News

Shi Yuqi is teaching China’s badminton barons to tiptoe around eggshells, and cultivate patience with athletes who might be physically or mentally weak(er). In between his two All England crowns — 2018 and 2025, Chinese sport has come a long way in learning to accommodate human fragilities — like having public meltdowns after losing, becoming Viktor Axelsen’s bunny on the Tour after repeatedly losing, and crumpling to the floor mid-match and being stretchered off due to high fever. Yuqi is prone to mental health breakdowns and to giving up because the body is crying out in pain physically. But both athlete and the badminton establishment have somehow clung on to not give up on each other. At Birmingham, Yuqi (pronounced yuchi), assured the coaches that their patience and backing was totally worth it, though China won’t ever stop looking for indestructible tall specimens who don’t come with the associated shenanigans. It’s unprecedented in Chinese men’s badminton that gets notoriously fretful over any weakness on court, and given how Lin Dan was followed by Chen Jin …

Lakshya Sen to feature in Lin Dan’s King Cup International

Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen will take part in the inaugural King Cup International Badminton Open 2024 starting on Friday in Shenzhen, China from 27th December to 29th December. It was fitting that the match schedule at the India Open Super 750 had HS Prannoy as the first Indian shuttler in action. In the last year, with the inconsistent Lakshya Sen and Srikanth Kidambi along with the struggling PV Sindhu, Prannoy has emerged as the leading singles player from the country, currently the only one in the top 10 of the world rankings. Stepping onto the court on a cold Tuesday morning in Delhi, Prannoy was red hot as he overcame tricky former World No.2 Chou Tien Chen in straight games to seal his place in the second round. In their last seven meetings, Prannoy and Chou had played four three-game contests that went upwards of an hour. There are rarely one-sided matches between them, but Prannoy started in fifth gear to race through the opening game. Knowing what was potentially on the cards for the remainder of the match, he didn’t take his foot off the pedal. But even when things got tighter in Game 2 in which Prannoy trailed 8-14, he kept …
