India and Afghanistan have agreed to work towards setting up a Joint Working Group to prepare a long-term roadmap for cooperation in agriculture and livestock, as the two countries look to expand collaboration in areas ranging from seeds and irrigation to research and agri-trade. The Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) has developed a goat milk soap and cheese to provide a source of income to goat farmers. Goat farmers are mostly engaged in the meat industry as milk with goats is only seasonal and not in demand compared to cow and buffalo milk. Products on display at the Pashu Palan Mela . The decision of the Maharashtra government to grant agriculture status to the livestock sector will help create large-scale rural entrepreneurship as it will enable easier access to loans and subsidies, state Animal Husbandry Minister Pankaja Munde said on Friday. She was speaking at the inauguration of the three-day Maha Livestock Expo 2026 in Parli Vaijnath here. “The move would allow livestock farmers to avail credit at agricultural rates and receive a 50 per cent subsidy for animal husbandry activities. People must take initiative in developing the sector as a sustainable source of rural employment,” Munde said. This output significantly outpaces that of indigenous breeds, which typically yield between 1,000 and 2,000 kg. On Wednesday, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan presented the registration certificates for these breeds along with 14 other new livestock and poultry varieties, bringing the country’s total number of registered breeds to 246. An adult tiger that had frequently strayed into human settlements and attacked domestic animals was trapped by the Forest department in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala on Monday (December 22, 2025), officials said. According to forest officials, the presence of the tiger was reported at Kumbalathamon, near Vadasserikara, over the past two months following repeated attacks on domestic animals. Forest department personnel later installed camera traps and confirmed the presence of the straying tiger. Officials said the tiger had killed buffaloes, dogs and goats belonging to farms and residences at Kumbalathamon, which is located close to the forest area. On Sunday, a goat was killed by the tiger, and its carcass was found at an isolated spot near the forest, an official said. Subsequently, forest officials laid a cage trap with the carcass used as bait near the location where the goat was found dead. The State government is fully geared up to initiate necessary measures to ensure water availability for livestock and promote sustainable water conservation practices in the drought-prone areas, especially rural areas, said Minister for Transport, Youth Affairs and Sports, Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy. Speaking to the media here on Monday, after reviewing the developmental works with the officials of the Revenue, Panchayat Raj, and Roads and Buildings (R&B), the Minister said that the N. Chandrababu Naidu government was giving top priority to farmers’ welfare and agrarian issues. To prevent water scarcity for the livestock, the government has sanctioned as many as 1,115 water troughs in Annamayya district, he said. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved two ropeway projects to cut down travel time to the two pilgrimage sites of Kedarnath and Hemkund Sahib in Uttarakhand. The Union Cabinet also approved the revision of the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP) on Wednesday, to ensure saturation vaccination to prevent and control livestock diseases, step up surveillance, and upgrade healthcare facilities. Both ropeway projects approved on Wednesday will be implemented under the National Ropeways Development Programme – Parvatmala Pariyojana, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, said while briefing the media on the Cabinet decisions. Kedarnath is situated at an elevation of nearly 12,000 feet in Rudraprayag district while Hemkund Sahib is at an elevation of 15,000 feet in Chamoli district.
