The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday seized unaccounted cash of Rs 24 lakh and two locker keys of the YSRCP Lok Sabha MP YS Avinash Reddy during searches carried out at seven premises in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in a money laundering case linked to the murder of former Andhra Pradesh minister and MP Y S Vivekananda Reddy. In the searches, being carried out in Hyderabad in Telangana and Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) at the residential premises of the key accused, ED’s Hyderabad zonal office also seized incriminating documents and digital devices. Vivekananda Reddy, paternal uncle of ex-Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy and a popular political leader (ex-MLA, ex-MP) from Kadapa, was found murdered on March 15, 2019, at his residence. The High Court of Andhra Pradesh (vide its order dated March 11, 2020) directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct further investigation. Banks cannot see or record what valuables customers store in lockers, as it would lead to a breach of banking regulations, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Monday, ruling out differential insurance coverage based on contents. Sitharaman was replying to a supplementary question raised by Congress leader and MP from Gadchiroli Chimur constituency, Namdeo Dasaram Kirsan, in the Lok Sabha during the Question Hour. “Sitting and watching the disclosure of a client of what valuables he is going to keep in the locker is a breach of banking rules, and banks wouldn`t do that, so that cannot be a measure for me to decide whether there should be differential coverage,” she said. The finance minister further said the standard coverage for locker holders is fixed at 100 times the annual locker rent in case of any loss. A complaint was filed on January 18 at Basaveshwaranagar Police Station by a bank manager residing in Byadarahalli. The complainant, employed at a bank in Basaveshwaranagar, prompted police to initiate an investigation into the matter. After stealing the ornaments, the accused sold them at a jewellery shop located in Agrahara Dasarahalli. (Pic used for representation) The complainant had utilised a locker facility at the bank, where gold ornaments, a bank chequebook, degree certificates, mark sheets, and other documents were stored. The locker was last verified in May 2024, at which point all belongings were confirmed to be intact. However, upon reopening the locker on December 30, it was discovered that approximately 200 to 250 grams of gold ornaments were missing. Since only bank staff had access to the locker room, suspicion arose against internal staff of the bank. This suspicion was noted in the complaint.
