Sreeja Akula was left the lone Indian standing at the 2026 WTT Champions Yokohama in Japan as Manika Batra, Manav Thakkar, and Manush Shah all suffered first round exits. Akula registered her career’s first win in a Champions event, beating Sofia Polcanova of Australia 3-2 in the first round. The Indian paddler lost her opening game 9-11 but fought back to win the next three 11-8, 11-6, 12-10 to register a come-from-behind victory in just over 32 minutes. Later, wildcard entrant Batra lost out 1-11, 7-11, 7-11 with barely any fight against the second seeded Kuai Man of China. In men’s singles, Shah and Thakkar also faced similar fate. While Thakkar went down 2-3 after a hard fought battle against Slovakia’s Darko Jorgic, Shah was blanked 3-0 by France’s sixth seeded Alexis Lebrun, leaving Akula the lone Indian standing in the prestigious tournament. Mirwaiz, MP Rashid, MP Ruhullah, Lone question mass arrests, demolitions after Anantnag attack

There is growing anger and anxiety among the leadership of the regional parties, including Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Member of Parliament (MP) Engineer Rashid and MP Aga Syed Ruhullah, over the mass arrests and demolitions of houses of families of terrorists in Kashmir in the backdrop of the Anantnag attack, which left a policeman dead two days ago. Addressing the Friday (July 24, 2026) congregation at the historic Jama Masjid Srinagar, the Mirwaiz said the past two days saw in Kashmir “large-scale detentions, questioning and harassment of youth across Kashmir, with over 2000 young men being picked up on allegations of being “over-ground workers” or OGWs”. “An act of violence by one cannot justify collective punishment for all. The killing should be investigated, and those responsible [in the Anantnag attack] should be dealt with according to law. But innocent youth and their families should not be scapegoats and made to suffer,” said the Mirwaiz. He said the reports of home demolitions of suspected militants, rendering their families homeless, “is another extrajudicial and unjust measure”. “Such measures …

The lone Afghan fan in the stands has friends on the field

3 min readJun 6, 2026 07:10 PM IST On his way to the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA Stadium in Mullanpur on Saturday morning, Khial Mohammad told his cab driver something worth remembering. Afghanistan, he said, stands very little chance against India. But the players will give their best. They always do. Mohammad had come alone. Of the 2,000-odd fans inside the ground, he was the only one waving an Afghanistan flag, standing in the harsh summer sun in the Harbhajan Singh pavilion. By afternoon, four other Afghan fans had trickled in to other parts of the ground. Until then, it was just him. He had reasons to be there beyond the match. Two of the players on the field are old friends. Nangeyalia Kharote, who made his Test debut on Saturday, is from Baghlan province. Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi is from Khost. Mohammad knows both from the junior cricket circuit back home. When Kharote’s name was called, Mohammad chanted it from the stands. A Kabul native, Mohammad has been studying at a private university near …

Biopic on cricketer Amir Hussain Lone announced

Impossible dreams come true. Cricketer Amir Hussain Lone is the personification of that truth. Lone, who lost his arms in an accident at the age of eight, didn’t let that deter him from realising his dream of turning cricketer, even becoming the captain of Jammu and Kashmir para cricket team. Now, a dream that he never dreamt has come true — a biopic on his life was announced at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival.  The movie, a story of the indomitable human spirit, will be directed by Nishil Sheth. Five years ago, the heads at Pickle Entertainment and Aarambh Productions approached Lone for the biopic. “I had a cricket match in Mumbai. That’s when the news spread that there was a cricketer from Kashmir, who was armless, but was representing his country. Later, the makers visited me in Kashmir and were shocked listening to my story,” said Lone, speaking exclusively to mid-day. Balbir Singh Seechewal, the Padma Shri-winning environmentalist-spiritual leader from Jalandhar district, stayed put. He has now spoken about what he knew beforehand, and why he said no. (PTI) A call from Sahney: ‘Many have signed’ Seechewal told local media that he’d been directly approached before the defection. “Vikram Sahney called. He said they were forming an independent group, and many had signed on. He asked me to sign too,” Seechewal told at least two web channels on Saturday. “I said no. I had no desire for that,” he said. Ayush Shetty lone Indian standing in quarters

Ayush Shetty lone Indian standing in quarters

India’s campaign at the 2026 Badminton Asia Championships unravelled spectacularly on Thursday with only Ayush Shetty advancing to the quarter-finals. The likes of PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy, Unnati Hooda, Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto, and Priya Konjengbam-Shruti Mishra all lost their respective matches in straight games to exit from the Round of 16. Shetty, up against a higher ranked Chi Yu Jen of Chinese Taipei, registered a 21-16, 21-12 win. The Indian was never in any real trouble as he wrapped up the contest in 41 minutes to reach the men’s singles final eight on his debut at the continental championships. Shetty, who has had a tough run in the year so far, seemed to be far more vocal on court. In contrast to his usual quiet avatar, he was imposing himself on the opponent with loud roars after each point.
