One of only two non-Chinese to win the low-key Macau Open since it became a Grand Prix – now a Super 300 – PV Sindhu learnt early what it took to succeed at the elite level. It’s a jaw-dropping fact when one thinks of it: Sindhu had only five lower-tier Tour titles before she won the silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics – three in a hat-trick (2013-15) at what used to be the season-ender at Macau. Treesa-Gayatri, Kidambi Srikanth advance to quarters

Indian shuttlers had a mixed day at the Macau Open Super 300 tournament as they managed only two wins in the pre-quarterfinal matches in Macau, China on Thursday. Former world no.1, Kidambi Srikanth continued his good run in the tournament and won his match in straight games (21-18, 21-13) against the young compatriot Ayush Shetty and advanced to the quarterfinals. In the second game, Ayush had a big lead and was looking ahead to force a decider but the experienced shuttler didn’t give him a chance and made a comeback(16-16) to finish the match in straight games. Kidambi will now face the second-seeded Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong for a place in the semifinals tomorrow. On the other hand, the young women’s doubles pairing of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also made it to the quarterfinals after a straight-game (22-20, 21-11) win over Chun Hsun Teng and Chich-Chun Lin of Chinese Taipei. Kidambi Srikanth advances to pre-quarterfinals

Former World No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth started off his Macau Open campaign with a straight-game win over Daniil Dubovenko of Israel in the first round at the Macau East Asian Games Dome, on Wednesday. Playing in his first competitive match since suffering an injury in May, Srikanth, now ranked 38th, made light work of Dubovenko, winning the match by a margin of 21-14, 21-15. The sixth-seed Indian shuttler had his nose in front right from the get-go, racing to an 11-5 lead in game one, before closing the game with a crafty winner. The second game saw Srikanth continue to assert his domination and won the contest in 35 minutes He will face fellow Indian shuttler Ayush Shetty on Thursday in the round of 16. Ayush advanced to the round of 16, defeating compatriot Alap Mishra 21-13, 21-5 in the round of 32. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand made a winning start to their Macau Open campaign as the Indian duo came from behind to beat Japan’s Akari Sato and Maya Taguchi 15-21, 16-21, 14-21 at Macao East Asian Games Dome, Macau, on Tuesday. The third-seeded Indian duo, who made a first-round exit from the China Open last week, lost the opening game against Akari and Maya. However, they showed their tremendous fighting spirit by claiming the next two games to book a place in the pre-quarterfinals. Treesa and Gayatri will face off against the winners of the first-round clash between Lin Chih Chun – Teng Chun Hsun and Chiu Pin Chian – Tung Ciou Tong in the pre-quarterfinals.
