5 min readMumbaiJul 21, 2026 02:19 PM IST Shekhar Suman made a memorable film debut with Girish Karnad’s 1984 erotic romance film Utsav. In the movie produced by Shashi Kapoor, Rekha played a courtesan, Vasantasena, who meets a poor man named Charudatta (Shekhar) in Ujjain. Speaking on SCREEN Spotlight, Shekhar recalled how Rekha, despite being a huge star by then, made him feel very comfortable on set. Shekhar Suman on working with Rekha “She did it, right from the start. When there’s an actor who walks around with a paraphernalia and acts like, ‘Look at me, I’m a big star,’ that becomes a problem. They have so many people looking after them and expect you to just sit in the corner and watch all the stardom. But she was away from all that. She’d sit next to me and make me comfortable. So, even before I gave my shot, I was very, very comfortable,” recalled Shekhar. He also gives credit to director Girish Karnad, who was an actor himself. “He told me, ‘Look, you’re just …

When Anil Kapoor revealed he wasn't meant to be in 'Ek Do Teen'

When Anil Kapoor revealed he wasn't meant to be in 'Ek Do Teen'

Veteran actor Anil Kapoor once revealed that he was not initially supposed to be a part of the iconic ‘Ek Do Teen’ track from his 1988 release “Tezaab”. During his appearance on “The Kapil Sharma Show’, Anil shared that originally the track was supposed to be only picturized on the leading lady of the drama, Madhuri Dixit. However, after listening to the song, Anil was convinced that it was going to be a major hit, hence he urged the composer Laxmikant, “I will also be a part of this song”. When Laxmikant argued that it was a girl’s track, Anil replied, “I don’t care”. Then Anil called renowned lyricist Javed Akhtar and requested him to change the lyrics.  “The song was not a part of the script, but I made it happen”, concluded the ‘Animal’ actor. Directed and produced by N. Chandra, “Tezaab” starred Anil and Madhuri as the lead pair, along with Anupam Kher, Chunky Panday, Kiran Kumar, and Suresh Oberoi as the supporting cast, along with others. Released on 11 November 1988, it …

Dharna Durga on Maa Behen, acting debut and creating relatable reels

When Dharna Durga first heard the title Maa Behen, she was instantly intrigued. “I thought, ‘What kind of title is this?’ It instantly made me curious. But as I heard the story of the film, I realised there couldn’t have been a better title. It’s one of those titles that stays with you,” she said. The content creator-turned actor is enjoying appreciation as her performance as Sushma in the Suresh Triveni film, co-starring Madhuri Dixit and Tripti Dimri, is being noticed. She says the transition from filming solo Instagram reels to working on a full-fledged movie set came with technical differences, but not the intimidation she expected. From creating characters inspired by everyday family life to navigating her first film set, Dharna Durga speaks about accidental success, overthinking, and trusting the process “In my videos, there aren’t many people behind the camera, but on a film set, the same scene is shot multiple times from different angles. That was the biggest difference,” she recalled. “But I never felt uncomfortable because everyone made me feel so …

Maa Behen writer Pooja Tolani on feminist gaze, deleted scenes and more

Until a day before the release of Maa Behen, the Madhuri Dixit, Triptii Dimri and Dharna Durga-starrer dark comedy, director Suresh Triveni joked that if writer Pooja Tolani had her way, she would still be writing and making changes to the script to perfect it. Looking at how well the Netflix film has been received by the audience, the writer’s itch is finally at rest.  Even as she continues to receive messages and mentions for the film’s feminism and cackling humour, mid-day gets on a call with her to talk about the five-year-long journey she undertook to write Maa Behen, what makes Rekha, Jaya and Sushma special and why the concept of ‘women writing women’ is a cop out. Sonali Bendre, Madhuri Dixit, Karisma Kapoor: How OTT is reimagining ’90s leading ladies | Web-series News

Sonali Bendre, Madhuri Dixit, Karisma Kapoor: How OTT is reimagining ’90s leading ladies | Web-series News

John Matthew Matthan’s 1999 cop thriller Sarfarosh was way ahead of its time. The grit and grime in Aamir Khan’s character of Ajay Singh Rathod is in the same zone as the no-nonsense investigators in the best streaming shows today. Its political astuteness is also as apt as the most layered police procedurals on OTT. While watching another such crime thriller, Raakh, on Prime Video India, I couldn’t believe how starkly different roles Sonali Bendre played in both the projects. Of course, it’s a testament to her range as a performer, but also speaks volumes of Bollywood’s tendency in the 1990s to paint its leading ladies in candy-coated colours without exploiting the depth they always had. Rising from the Raakh No wonder that Sonali said she was reduced to “comic relief” in Sarfarosh. While she didn’t completely make a fool of herself with her ceaseless “don’t mind” chatter, the heavy lifting was reserved for Aamir and Naseeruddin Shah. Even Surekha Sikri had more impact in her cameo as the mother of Sultan. It was pretty …

Madhuri Dixit on facing body shaming In an interview with News18, Madhuri revealed that she too was at the receiving end of judgmental remarks when she began her career in the 1980s. Madhuri opened up about being body-shamed and said, “You’re a public figure. You’re putting yourself out there. There will, of course, be some comments coming your way that yeh aisi hai, yeh waisi hai. When I had started out, they thought I was too skinny. They would be like, isko kuch khilaao (feed her something). When it comes to these things, people are very quick to judge. They judge you for putting on weight, they judge you …

3 min readNew DelhiJun 16, 2026 09:02 PM IST More than two decades after Dil To Pagal Hai became a Bollywood classic, Karisma Kapoor has opened up about the role that changed perceptions of what a leading lady could be on screen. Looking back at her portrayal of Nisha, the actor revealed that several actresses were hesitant to take up the part because it required sharing screen space and a dance face-off with Madhuri Dixit. In a conversation with India Today, Karisma recalled how the role came with its own set of challenges at a time when conventional heroine characters dominated Hindi cinema. “When Dil To Pagal Hai was being made, no actress wanted to do the role opposite Madhuri. Nobody wanted to dance with her and compete with her in a dance face-off,” she recalled. Why Dil To Pagal Hai’s Nisha stood out in Bollywood Karisma Kapoor said Nisha was unlike the typical female leads audiences were used to seeing in films of that era.
