From ‘Khan vs Ban’ to its first Muslim mayor: Parbhani turns Shiv Sena’s history on its head | Mumbai News

Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Syed Iqbal Syed Khwaja was elected mayor of Parbhani on Thursday, becoming the first Muslim leader to be nominated for the post by the Shiv Sena since the party was formed in the 1960s. The 40-year-old first-time corporator won with the support of the Congress, defeating BJP candidate Tirumala Khilare in a direct contest. Syed secured 39 votes in the 65-member Parbhani Municipal Corporation, while Khilare got 26. The majority mark in the House is 33. With this win, Parbhani is the only municipal corporation where the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction has managed to form the civic government. Parbhani was one of the first places where the Shiv Sena openly used religious division to win elections. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the party ran campaigns that clearly pitched Hindu voters against Muslim candidates. In the 1990 Assembly elections, Shiv Sena candidate Hanumant Bobde won from Parbhani after the Congress fielded a Muslim candidate, Shamim Ahmed Khan. Another Opposition candidate split the non-Sena vote, helping Bobde win. The campaign is …

The making of ISLAM: In Malegaon, a new party built on old networks rises to the top | Political Pulse News

The making of ISLAM: In Malegaon, a new party built on old networks rises to the top | Political Pulse News

Malegaon, one of Maharashtra’s most politically distinct cities, has once again charted its own course. In the recently concluded municipal Corporation elections, the city delivered a clear verdict in favour of a new political formation, ISLAM, floated by former Congress MLA Shaikh Asif, which emerged as the single-largest party in the 84-member civic body. ISLAM, short for Indian Secular Largest Assembly of Maharashtra, won 35 seats and, along with its ally Samajwadi Party, which secured five, crossed the halfway mark. The alliance is now set to install its mayor, making Malegaon one of the few cities in the state where power rests outside both the ruling Mahayuti and the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi. A city shaped by minority politics Muslims make up 11.56% of Maharashtra’s population, but in Malegaon, the figure rises to nearly 78%, giving the community a decisive role in the city’s politics. Malegaon Central is among the rare Assembly constituencies in the state to have consistently elected a Muslim MLA since Independence. For decades, politics here revolved around two influential families, that …

Is Sharad Pawar holding back? Veteran leader’s silence on Parth land row irks ally Congress | Political Pulse News

The reluctance of the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) to aggressively take on the NCP over corruption allegations in a Pune land deal involving the veteran leader’s grandnephew Parth Pawar has created a sense of unease among its Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) partner Congress, with many of the view that the NCP (SP) is throwing away an opportunity to demand the resignation of Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, Parth’s father, and create momentum for the alliance ahead of the local body polls. “There has always been a systematic plan by the BJP and our allies to weaken the Congress. Now, with Pawar refraining from taking on Ajit, it is out in the open,” former Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole said recently, adding that the NCP(SP) should have taken an aggressive stand against Parth and Ajit. Another senior Congress leader admitted that a united call to demand Ajit’s resignation would have exerted pressure on the government. “However, it seems the decision not to pursue the matter was taken as the Pawar family name was involved,” he said. Opposition to leave call on alliance to local units for first phase of civic polls | Mumbai News

No party can afford to ask workers to back down since the local body polls are being held after a long gap,” said a senior Congress leader. The leader said that wherever necessary, the alliance will take place depending on the local conditions. The meeting did not finalise about the inclusion of Raj Thackeray led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) in the MVA. The Congress had kept distance with …

Maharashtra: As Sena (UBT) eyes LoP post, Congress gets PAC chairmanship | Mumbai News

The appointment of senior Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar as chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is set to ruffle feathers within the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) as the NCP (SP) was eyeing the post. Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar on Wednesday cleared the appointments on various legislative committees. As per norms, the PAC is headed by an opposition member. With the Shiv Sena (UBT) staking claim on the Leader of Opposition post, the Congress has staked claim on the PAC chairmanship. Even though Wadettiwar heads the committee, out of other 19 members, the only opposition member is Rohit Pawar of the NCP (SP) while 16 others are from the ruling Mahayuti. Two places have been kept vacant. The PAC is one of the most crucial legislative committees as it recommends actions on issues raised in CAG reports. The committee can also take up or highlight specific projects/ issues which may not be comfortable to the government.
