Eknath Shinde Takes On Rahul Gandhi Over Dharavi Project

Eknath Shinde Takes On Rahul Gandhi Over Dharavi Project

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde ripped into Congress’s Rahul Gandhi today for opposing the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, alleging that he is out to rob Maharashtra. “This is Asia’s biggest project and I appeal to the people of Dharavi to keep politics aside and consider what is beneficial for them,” he said. Accusing the Leader of the Opposition of spreading misinformation about the project, he said, “Two lakh people will get houses in Dharavi… and everyone should give it priority”. Sena UBT, the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) have said if they come to power, the Dharavi Redevelopment Project will be shelved as it has ramifications for the whole of Mumbai. The project – which is set to give the largest slum in Asia spanning over 250 hectares – is a joint venture between the Maharashtra government and the Adani Group. Eligible residents will be given 350-sq-ft flats in the area after the project is completed. Those not eligible will be rehoused elsewhere in the city. Schools, community halls, and hospitals will …

“Batenge Toh Katenge” Slogan Divides Not Just Allies, But Some In BJP Too

“Batenge Toh Katenge” Slogan Divides Not Just Allies, But Some In BJP Too

Mumbai: BJP star campaigner Yogi Adityanath’s “Batenge toh katenge” slogan, at the forefront of the party campaign in Maharashtra, is not only making its allies squirm, it is also causing deep discomfort among a section of BJP leaders, which has been voiced by Pankaja Munde and Ashok Chavan. Among allies, Ajit Pawar, the leader of Nationalist Congress Party, has already shared his misgivings, saying while such slogans may work in the north, it is not appropriate for Maharashtra, the “land of saints and followers of Shiva”. The “Batenge toh katenge (Division is destruction)” slogan, which the Opposition alleged has communal overtones, has already been tweaked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Ek hai toh safe hai,” PM Modi had said earlier this month, repackaging its message of unity.  But it did not forestall a gusher of disapproval from party leaders and allies.  Pankaja Munde, daughter of late BJP stalwart Gopinath Munde, was the first to speak up.  “Frankly, my politics is different. I won’t support it just because I belong to the same party. My belief …

Three-Time Winner Amin Patel, Shaina NC Fight For Mumbadevi

Three-Time Winner Amin Patel, Shaina NC Fight For Mumbadevi

Mumbai: Mumba Devi is the presiding deity of Mumbai, the country’s financial capital, and the constituency named after her is set for an epic battle this time. The three-time MLA from the seat is Congress’s Amin Patel and his challenger from the  ruling alliance is Shaina NC, who switched from the BJP to Shiv Sena after getting a ticket from this constituency ahead of the Maharashtra assembly elections. The political equation in the constituency had changed in 2009, when Congress’s Amin Patel won this seat and put brakes on the BJP’s long-term hold. Till now, Amin Patel has maintained his influence on this seat.  Though small, the constituency reflects the cosmopolitan nature of the city.  This area was settled a long time ago and has not been redeveloped. Over the years, little has been done in terms of infrastructure — dilapidated buildings, narrow lanes, traffic and filth form part of Mumbadevi’s daily struggle. The constituency is Muslim-dominated, with the community comprising 55 per cent of the electorate. NDTV found that while the Eknath Shinde government’s …

Maharashtra Assembly polls: Police vehicles being used to provide financial aid to candidates of ruling parties, says Pawar

Maharashtra Assembly polls: Police vehicles being used to provide financial aid to candidates of ruling parties, says Pawar

Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar. File | Photo Credit: The Hindu Nationalist Congress Party (SP) president Sharad Pawar alleged on Saturday (November 2, 2024) that police vehicles are being used to provide financial assistance to the candidates of the ruling parties in Maharashtra ahead of the Assembly polls. Addressing reporters at his residence, Govindbag in Baramati, the former Union Minister said he wanted to speak more on the issue publicly but is refraining from doing so as this would hurt the officials who have shared the information with him. Mr. Pawar’s grandnephews and his party’s candidates, Yugendra Pawar (Baramati) and Rohit Pawar (Karjat-Jamkhed), were also present at the press conference. The extended Pawar family meets at Govindbag every year, but this year Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and his family were missing. “We have come to know from many districts, from officials, that candidates from the ruling parties are getting financial assistance for polls and that police vehicles are being used. Officials of the police department have also said that,” Mr. Pawar claimed. The former …

BJP’s Kalidas Kolambkar is confident in winning Maharashtra polls, aims to enter Guinness Book Record

Kalidas Kolambkar, an eight-time Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly (MLA), exuded confidence in the forthcoming Maharashtra assembly elections. File | Photo Credit: Vivek Bendre Kalidas Kolambkar, an eight-time Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly (MLA), exuded confidence in the forthcoming Maharashtra assembly elections, stating that he aims to enter the Guinness Book of World Records by winning his ninth consecutive term since 1990. “I’ve been an MLA for eight terms and will break this trend and enter the Guinness Book Record after winning my ninth consecutive term,” Mr. Kolambkar said. When asked what were his expectations while contesting the election for the 9th term and after remaining undefeated in Maharashtra polls, Mr. Kolambkar said, “In politics, nothing is surprising. If you approach politics commercially, it’s tough, but if you do it wholeheartedly, serving the people, they’ll surely elect you again.” “In my area, Wadala-Naigaon constituency history shows that once an MLA is chosen, they rarely get re-elected. But I’ve been MLA for nine terms, breaking this trend. This time, I will win my ninth …

Nawab Malik Slams BJP Leader’s “Irresponsible” Comment

Nawab Malik Slams BJP Leader’s “Irresponsible” Comment

New Delhi: Nawab Malik, now the official candidate of the Ajit Pawar faction of the Nationalist Congress Party, told NDTV today that the allegations now levelled at him were “irresponsible” and the verdicts in the cases would vindicate him. His response was to the remarks of senior BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who had called him a “terrorist”. “These are irresponsible statements. Nawab Malik was never a terrorist nor was ever with any terrorist or any criminal. Nawab Malik has been in politics in this country for 50 years,” Mr Malik told NDTV in an exclusive interview.  Some people think giving such comments would help increase their vote bank but it actually has the opposite effect, he said. “Now the matter is sub judice, so I can’t obviously discuss it. Once the verdict comes, everything will be clear,” he added. Mr Malik was arrested by central agencies in an alleged  money laundering case involving mafia don Dawood Ibrahim and his associates Chhota Shakeel and Tigar Memon. He is currently out on bail. The BJP had refused …

Hours Before Maharashtra Nominations Close, Suspense Continues Over Seat Division

Hours Before Maharashtra Nominations Close, Suspense Continues Over Seat Division

Mumbai: The assembly election in Maharashtra this year has gone off script, with no clarity on which party is contesting how many seats in the ruling alliance or the opposition front. On the eve of the last day of filing of nominations, decision on nine seats in the ruling alliance is yet to be announced. The image on the other side is even more blurred. The Maha Vikas Aghadi, which made headlines for weeks over its tussle over seat sharing, is yet to provide a final frame. The alliance has already gone past the 85-85-95 seat sharing and announced disparate number of seats. Even so, there has been no announcement on 16 seats, while its other allies, including Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party, wait in the wings. In the ruling alliance, the BJP, which initially said it would contest on 150 seats, announced that they would contest on 146, leaving four seats for smaller allies — the Yuva Swabhiman Party, Rashtriya Samaj Paksha, Republican Party of India (Athavale) and Jan Surajya Shakti Paksha. But two of …

BJP Leader Shaina NC Fielded By Eknath Shinde Party In Maharashtra Polls

BJP Leader Shaina NC Fielded By Eknath Shinde Party In Maharashtra Polls

Mumbai: Shaina NC, the spokesperson of the BJP, has made an appearance on the list of Shiv Sena of Eknath Shinde — one of the many surprises thrown up by the tussle over seats on either side in the assembly elections in Maharashtra. The 51-year-old has been fielded from Mumbadevi and will file her nomination at noon tomorrow, which is the last day for filing nomination.  The Mumbadevi constituency is a part of the Mumbai Lok Sabha seat. It has been represented by the Congress since 2009. Shaina NC was in fray for the Worli seat, which has gone to Shiv Sena’s Milind Deora. Fielding her from the Mumbadevi seat is seen as Sena’s way of making amends.  “I am not at all upset. It is the party and the alliance’s decision to select the candidate. I congratulate my friend Milind Deora on his candidature as the Mahayuti candidate for the prestigious Worli assembly constituency,” Saina NC was quoted as saying by news agency ANI after the announcement. “As an alliance, the decision to select …

Senior Mumbai Leader Gopal Shetty’s Rebellion After BJP Gives Ticket To Outsider

Senior Mumbai Leader Gopal Shetty’s Rebellion After BJP Gives Ticket To Outsider

BJP leader Gopal Shetty to contest as an independent from Borivali. Mumbai: An assembly constituency in Mumbai saw the BJP workers protest against their own party after an “outsider” was fielded from there for the upcoming Maharashtra assembly election. Upset over the decision, senior BJP leader Gopal Shetty – a strong contender for the seat – announced that he will contest the election as an independent candidate. “It is necessary to oppose this tradition of fielding candidates from outside, so I will fight as an independent candidate,” Mr Shetty told NDTV. “No matter what happens, I will not back down,” he added. The BJP has fielded Mumbai unit general secretary Sanjay Upadhyay from Borivali replacing sitting legislator Sunil Rane. “I was not interested in contesting this election. But my supporters told me about the gravity of the situation. First Vinod Tawde contested from here in 2014, then Sunil Rane in 2019. This time, the Lok Sabha ticket from Mumbai North was given to Piyush Goyal. This is happening for the fourth time with Upadhyay being …
