In the days since the verdict, developments here have attracted more attention than even Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, largely due to sharp infighting within the ruling camp. In KDMC, the real battle was not between the ruling alliance and the opposition, but within the alliance itself. The contest has played out between the Shiv Sena led by Kalyan MP Shrikant Shinde and its partner, the BJP, headed in the state by Ravindra Chavan. Opposition parties remained mostly on the margins during the elections, but their numbers have now become crucial in deciding who will control the civic body. In the second phase of local body elections held in Mumbai, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the highest number of seats in Mumbai, while Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) finished second and to take the position of a “strong” Opposition for the first time in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The BJP is leading with 89 seats, while its alliance partner Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena has 29 seats in the BMC. The Shiv Sena (UBT) has won 65 seats, the MNS has won six seats, and the Congress managed to survive with 24 seats. Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won three seats, and Sharad Pawar’s NCP won one seat. The surprising element was the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) winning eight seats, while the Samajwadi Party got two seats. Opposition to leave call on alliance to local units for first phase of civic polls | Mumbai News

The Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has decided to leave the decision on forming alliance for the upcoming first phase of municipal council and municipal panchayat elections in Maharashtra to the local units of the parties. Leaders of the the MVA, including from Sena UBT, NCP(SP), and Congress, held a meeting in Mumbai on Tuesday but refrained from announcing the alliance. “The meeting was about general coordination between the constituents of INDIA bloc. It was decided to allow local units to take their decision on contesting these elections as per their wish, since a huge number of workers from all parties are willing to contest these elections. No party can afford to ask workers to back down since the local body polls are being held after a long gap,” said a senior Congress leader. The leader said that wherever necessary, the alliance will take place depending on the local conditions.
