MGNREGA to be replaced by Viksit Bharat rural jobs mission from July 1

The Centre on Monday announced that the Viksit Bharat — Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Act will come into force across the country from July 1, replacing the two-decade-old Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). The new Act will have a fresh framework that promises 125 days of statutory wage employment to rural households, it said. The Centre said the allocation of Rs 95,692.31 crore for 2026-27 is the highest-ever Budget Estimate allocation for a rural employment programme. The Chandigarh Congress on Sunday staged a dharna at Labour Chowk in Sector 44 to protest against the Union government, alleging that it has weakened the Congress party’s flagship welfare scheme, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), 2005, and removed the name of Mahatma Gandhi from the programme. Congress activists, residents from rural areas of Chandigarh and members of the labour workforce participated in the protest. Chief minister Siddaramaiah arrived in New Delhi on Friday to attend a Congress Working Committee meeting scheduled for December 27 at Indira Bhavan. Minor girl falls into water pit and dies in Tirupati district

A minor girl died after falling into a water pit at Lakshmipuram village of Varadaiahpalem mandal of Tirupati district on Friday. The pit was dug under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act(MGNREGA). Born to daily wage earners, the girl (16) was studying her first-year vocational course at a private college in Gudur. When she came home for the holidays, she went around to clean the buffaloes in the nearby fields on Thursday evening, when she slipped into the pit. She raised an alarm as she could not swim, but eventually drowned. As part of their frantic search for their daughter, the parents found her body in the pit on Friday morning. Satyavedu MLA Koneti Adimulam visited the bereaved family and promised all support from the government. 18 States yet to receive ₹4,700 crore in MGNREGS wages from Union government

Photo used for representation purpose only. | Photo Credit: PTI   It has been a year since funds under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) were withheld for West Bengal, owing to the alleged widespread violations by the State government in the implementation of the scheme. The latest figures however, show that the Centre’s dues to many other States are also significantly high, with just three months to go for the financial year to end. The Centre, as on December 14 owes ₹4,700 crore of wages to 18 states and ₹5,450 crore worth material costs to 19 States. Out of the ₹4,700 crore worth wages , ₹2,748 crore liability is only for West Bengal. Even if the sum is set aside, nearly ₹2,000 crore of wages, as on December 14 has not been paid to 17 States. The list includes Nagaland with just 4.32 lakh job cards, the wage due of the Centre is ₹192 crore. The notified wage for Nagaland is ₹216 per day …
