Southwest monsoon reaches Kerala, marks official beginning of rainy season

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the arrival of the southwest monsoon over Kerala, marking the official beginning of India`s four-month rainy season, reported the PTI. The monsoon reached Kerala on June 4, a few days later than its usual onset date of 1 June. Earlier forecasts had suggested the monsoon would arrive as early as May 26, but its progress was delayed. According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon has now advanced across the entire Lakshadweep region, Kerala and Mahe, as well as parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The weather system has also expanded over large sections of the Arabian Sea, the Comorin area and several parts of the Bay of Bengal, indicating a steady progression across the country. MAHE and Griffith University expand India-Australia academic partnership with dual Ph.D programme

Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) | Photo Credit: File photo Manipal Academy of Higher Institution of Eminence (MAHE) in collaboration with Griffith University, Australia has launched a ‘Dual Award Doctoral Programme’ and formalised a joint commitment to establish the Griffith-MAHE Centre of Research Excellence at the MAHE Bengaluru campus. This initiative aims at addressing the growing need for globally connected and interdisciplinary doctoral training. The dual doctoral programme provides Ph.D scholars with access to academic supervisors from both MAHE and Griffith University. They will be enrolled in both the institutions simultaneously and will be awarded with doctoral degrees from both institutions upon completion. Scholars pursuing research will also earn a stipend ranging from ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 per month. Commenting on the partnership, Abhinav Bhatia, Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner, South Asia, Trade and Investment Queensland, said, “Queensland and India share a strong and growing relationship across education, research and innovation. Indian Navy to commission INS Mahe, first in new ASW-SWC class

The Indian Navy will commission INS Mahe, the first vessel of the Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on November 24. The ship marks a major step forward in the Navy’s indigenous shipbuilding programme, according to a release.  Built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi, INS Mahe reflects the Navy’s push for self-reliance under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Despite its compact size, the vessel is equipped for high agility and precision, enabling it to operate effectively in shallow waters, an area critical for coastal security. Designed for anti-submarine warfare operations, coastal patrols and safeguarding key maritime routes, the ship combines firepower, stealth and mobility. Officials said the Mahe-class boasts over 80 per cent indigenous content, underscoring India’s expanding capabilities in warship design, construction and systems integration, as per a release.  Named after the historic coastal town of Mahe on the Malabar Coast, the ship carries a crest featuring a Urumi, a flexible Kalarippayattu sword that symbolises speed, precision and lethality. The bridge, which is in a state of weakening, will be fully closed during this period. The closure mandates a detour for those taking the national highway 66, redirecting them via the Mahe bypass. The maintenance works are deemed essential due to the historical significance of the bridge and concerns over its structural safety. Constructed in 1933, the bridge underwent significant modifications over the years, including a pier installation in 1971 and substantial repair work in 2016 to address structural deficiencies.
