Mahesh Bhatt met Lorraine at 16, wrote letters in blood; Pooja Bhatt says it inspired Aashiqui

When filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt made Aashiqui in 1990, audiences loved it and it became one of the most memorable love stories of Hindi cinema. More than three decades later, his daughter, actor Pooja Bhatt, has revealed that the blockbuster was rooted in a deeply personal chapter of her parents’ lives. Speaking on Cyrus Broacha’s podcast, Pooja shared that Aashiqui was inspired by the real-life romance between Mahesh Bhatt and her mother, Lorraine Bright, who later changed her name to Kiran Bhatt. “Aashiqui was based on my mother and father’s love story. My mother was in a Scottish orphanage, and my dad lived in a building across from it. He saw her during a sports day event, jumped the wall to meet her, and got caught.” Pooja said the episode prompted an unforgettable response from her grandmother, Betty Bertha Bright. “My grandmother was called, and she said, ‘Listen, I just put my youngest child in boarding school. If you are old enough to jump the wall, you are old enough to look after her.’” Pooja recalled …

The actor-filmmaker recalled how her grandmother insisted on holding a funeral for her amputated leg, leaving the family stunned. During the conversation, she also revealed that Aashiqui, the 1990 blockbuster, was inspired by her parents’ romance. She was as tough as nails. She grew up in Calcutta during the time of the Raj,” Pooja Bhatt recalled. She went on to narrate how diabetes led to her grandmother losing a leg, but even that became an occasion for her trademark black humour. “She developed diabetes later in life, so her leg had to be amputated. When the leg was amputated, she insisted on a funeral for it. So all …

Pooja Bhatt was just 17 when she made her debut in the movies in her father Mahesh Bhatt’s film Daddy but Pooja, in a recent interview, claimed that the film “wasn’t designed to launch” her. In fact, she had made up her mind about not being in the movies after her first film and so when she was approached by her family for Aashiqui, she said no because her boyfriend at the time did not really love the fact that she was an actor. In a chat with Cyrus Broacha on his YouTube channel Cyrus Says, Pooja recalled, “My first film wasn’t designed to launch me. My father said, I have this story where a 17-year-old is the protagonist, and I was 17 then. He said you will be right for this part so would you be interested? I said let me think about it.” Pooja admitted that she was fully aware that being in the movies was “not an easy business” and she, for a brief period, had thought about being an architect, or …

Mahesh Bhatt confirms he’ll never direct again, says film content is pre-decided: ‘Then what is the role of an artiste’

In a long and storied career, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt has directed a staggering 47 films. But all of them, barring one, came in the 20th century. His most prolific period was the 90s, when he directed 30 films in 10 years, including cult classics like Zakhm and Sir, as well as hits such as Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke and Sadak. But 1999 was when he retired, taking a back seat to focus on producing films. When he returned with Sadak 2 in 2020, many had hoped the veteran was primed for a comeback. But in a candid chat with HT, the 77-year-old rules out any possibility of a return to the director’s chair. Mahesh Bhatt has only directed one film in the last 27 years. ‘I would beg for money for my films’ Mahesh Bhatt began his career as a director with Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain in 1974, but it wasn’t until the 80s that he broke through with critically acclaimed films like Arth and Saaraansh. “I would give money to make those films, …

Imtiaz Ali’s Partition-era romance Main Vaapas Aaunga has slowly and steadily carved out its own place at the box office. The film continues to draw audiences in strong numbers, making its mark at a time when only tentpole spectacles are often believed to have the scale and longevity to survive in theatres. Along with audience appreciation, the film has also been receiving praise from industry insiders. The latest to celebrate the film is Mahesh Bhatt, who penned a heartfelt note for Imtiaz Ali. Writing for Variety India, Bhatt shared a note titled “On Thirst and Main Vaapas Aaunga.” He began by saying that while some films arrive with great fanfare, others quietly leave a lasting impact. “There are films that arrive with drums and trumpets, announcing themselves like conquerors. And there are films that arrive quietly, carrying only the fragile cargo of a human heart. Main Vaapas Aaunga belongs to the latter category.” ALSO READ | Salman Khan to leave Galaxy after 52 years, gets approval for new 6-storey home: report He described the film …
