Borussia Dortmund Beat Mainz To Keep Champions League Hopes Alive

Borussia Dortmund Beat Mainz To Keep Champions League Hopes Alive

Maximilian Beier scored twice as Borussia Dortmund won 3-1 at home to Mainz in the Bundesliga on Sunday, keeping their slim hopes of European qualification alive. Champions League finalists last season, Dortmund had lost four of their past six games to sink to 12th before the match.  Dortmund were without injured striker Serhou Guirassy but Beier filled the void as he gave the hosts the lead after 32 minutes, finishing off a goal he initiated. The 22-year-old Germany forward gathered the ball in midfield, shed a defender and found Julian Brandt who whipped in a cross and Beier threaded the ball to Karim Adeyemi, who returned the favour, giving him a simple tap-in.  Emre Can doubled Dortmund’s lead just four minutes later, heading in a Nico Schlotterbeck corner. Schlotterbeck supplied Dortmund’s third as well in the 72nd minute, floating in a superb ball which allowed Beier to head home, before Mainz pulled one back through Paul Nebel. Dortmund manager Niko Kovac said there was “nothing more beautiful than winning in football”, but added …

Mainz Ease Past Borussia Moenchengladbach To Go Third In Bundesliga

Bundesliga: Mainz defeated Borussia Moenchengladbach 3-1© AFP Mainz climbed into third place in the Bundesliga with a 3-1 win at Borussia Moenchengladbach on Friday. The result takes Bo Henriksen’s charges to 44 points, provisionally two ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt in fourth place. Goals shortly before and after the half-time interval from Paul Nebel and Dominik Kohr put Mainz in the driving seat. Stefan Lainer pulled one back for the hosts in the final 20 minutes but Nadiem Amiri swiftly restored Mainz’s two-goal lead to earn them their fourth league victory in their last five outings. “It was a deserved win for us over 90 minutes,” Kohr told DAZN. “We’re happy where we are. We have 44 points, what a feeling. The way we play football, we belong up there.” Mainz boast a four-point buffer to Freiburg, who lie just outside the Champions League spots in fifth and face sixth-placed RB Leipzig on Saturday. With nine games to go, Mainz are seeking to earn European football for the first time since their 2016-17 group …

Mainz Hand Bayern Munich First League Loss Under Vincent Kompany

Mainz Hand Bayern Munich First League Loss Under Vincent Kompany

Two goals from Jae-sung Lee took Mainz to a shock 2-1 home win over Bayern Munich on Saturday, handing coach Vincent Kompany his first league loss. Lee scored in each half against an uncharacteristically poor Bayern, who are now just four points clear after Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-0 win at Augsburg. Injuries meant Kompany was unable to call on several first team regulars including Harry Kane, Manuel Neuer, Alphonso Davies, Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry and Joao Palhinha. Kane’s absence was particularly telling in the first half, with the league leaders dominating possession but unable to convert any of their half chances into a goal.  Mainz boasted a better-than-expected home record against the German giants, having won three of their past four home league games over Bayern.  The home side struck shortly before half-time, Lee taking advantage of a poor clearance from his South Korea teammate Min-Jae Kim to hammer home.  Even with the knowledge that Leverkusen were ahead in Augsburg, Bayern came out poorer after half-time, lacking precision and energy.  Mainz soon capitalised through …

‘Are You Crazy?’: FC Mainz Fans Slam Jurgen Klopp’s Red Bull Move

Fans of Bundesliga side Mainz unveiled banners slamming former coach Jurgen Klopp’s decision to join Red Bull in Saturday’s 2-0 home loss against RB Leipzig. Using a play on words with Klopp’s last name, the home fans asked “Are you crazy?” and used a quote from their side’s former boss: “I like people until the point they disappoint me.” A larger banner, in big red letters, asked Klopp if he had “forgotten everything we gave you?”. A former player at the club, Klopp coached Mainz for seven years, taking the team to the top flight for the first time before moving to Borussia Dortmund and later Liverpool.  Klopp stepped down as Liverpool manager in the summer having won several titles, including the Premier League and Champions League.  In October, Klopp announced he would join energy drink company Red Bull, which owns clubs in Leipzig, Salzburg and New York, as their global head of football from January 2025. His decision to take up the job at Red Bull has annoyed supporters in Germany — …
