Kochi: The NIA has taken over the probe into the seizure of a large quantity of gelatin sticks and detonators from Tirurangadi in Kerala’s Malappuram district in February this year, officials said on Thursday. (HT) The National Investigation Agency took over the case last month and recently approached the Judicial First Class Magistrate-I court in Parappanangadi seeking transfer of case records to its special court in Kochi, sources said. The case relates to the seizure of 89,600 gelatin sticks concealed in 448 boxes, along with 10,500 non-electric shock tube detonators, from an onion-laden lorry at Chemmad near Tirurangadi on February 7, 2026. Acting on a tip-off, police raided a brick manufacturing unit where a lorry carrying onions was parked and found people unloading the explosives from it. Officials at the Tirurangadi police station said the case has been handed over to the central agency. “We had arrested six persons in connection with the case. A total of 13,194 pilgrims have been selected from Kerala for the pilgrimage this year. Of them, 7,943 will depart from Kochi, 4,279 from Kannur and 944 from Kozhikode, it said. Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar laid the foundation stone for the KSRTC-SIMCO project on Friday (February 20, 2026), describing it as a milestone in Kerala’s vehicle recycling sector. The Edappal RVSF will cater to the districts of Palakkad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Idukki. Similar centres are planned for northern and southern Kerala in collaboration with Steel Industries Kerala Ltd (SILK). Mr. Ganesh Kumar said the project would help curb illegal and environmentally harmful vehicle scrapping practices in the State. Once operational, the Edappal facility will ensure that vehicle recycling in central Kerala is carried out scientifically and with full approval from Central and State government departments, he added. A one-year-old toddler died after choking on a stone he swallowed in Kerala. The incident occurred on Sunday at Changaramkulam in Malappuram district. The child, Aslam Nooh, son of Mahroof and Rumana from Pallikkara, swallowed several small stones while playing in the courtyard of his house. One of the stones became lodged in his throat, leading to his death. The child was rushed to a hospital after he began choking. However, the stone remained lodged in his throat, and he died a few hours later. An elephant fell into a well in Malappuram district of Kerala on Thursday (January 23, 2025) morning. However, the Forest department is facing difficulties in rescuing the pachyderm as local residents want it to be relocated to deep forest area instead of releasing in the same area again. The owner of the land at Urangattiri where the well is located and other local residents told the Nilambur DFO that they will not allow anyone to carry out the rescue work till an assurance is given that the elephant will be tranquilised and transported into a deep forest. They also demanded compensation for the their crops destroyed by the elephants frequenting in the area. The DFO said it was not an easy process to tranquilise and relocate the elephant.
