Beyond Drishyam: Mohanlal delivered a whole year of Lalism with 5 performances, a Best Actor award | Malayalam News

It is often said that “Mammootty becomes his character,” while in Mohanlal’s case, “the character becomes him.” Even as this statement isn’t axiomatically true, and one can easily list several characters where even an iota of Mohanlal wasn’t visible, there is merit to the claim to a large extent. There’s a bit of Mohanlal-ness in most of his performances. The question we should be asking here instead is: is that a big deal? If his portrayals are pitch-perfect and he presents the characters’ journeys in their entirety, ensuring he captures every layer, does it matter that some of them share similarities in gestures, body language, and tone of voice? I would argue that it is subjective, as the answer will depend on each person’s definition and understanding of acting. 4 min readKochiApr 14, 2026 04:44 PM IST Among the many things Malayalam cinema is known and appreciated for, its long list of extraordinary character actors ranks among the highest. Ever since the industry’s birth, one of its major strengths has been that creators could courageously write layered, impactful roles not just for the leading stars but also for the supporting ones, as they would be just as talented, if not more, than the former. Indrans is one such artiste who has often displayed his immense potential by playing a wide range of roles across starkly different genres, thus positioning himself as one of the most potent arrows in the quiver of Malayalam cinema. Indrans’ early life Born on March 16, 1956, in Thiruvananthapuram as Surendran Kochuvelu, Indrans made his foray into the film industry in 1981 as a costume designer, and then kick-started his career as an actor by taking on small roles. While he initially played predominantly comedic characters and excelled at them, he was often typecast in those roles, with few filmmakers …

4 min readKochiApr 8, 2026 09:00 PM IST The love for Mohanlal among Malayalees knows no bounds. A small glimpse of this was visible following the release of director Tharun Moorthy’s Thudarum (2025), when even elderly people, who hadn’t been to theatres in a long time, flocked to cinemas to see their dear “Lalettan” on the big screen. In a career spanning 46 years, Mohanlal has starred in over 360 films, becoming beloved to several generations and reigning over the regional industry’s box office in an unparalleled manner. Hence, just imagine the Malayali wrath someone would face if Mohanlal had to take the blame for their wrongdoing, even if it’s just on screen. The consequences could be disastrous, and actor-producer Maniyanpilla Raju can attest to the same. In fact, his wedding was nearly called off because Mohanlal was convicted for a crime Raju committed, albeit on screen. Malayalam’s greatest actor served in Army and police before cinema; redefined screen acting; kept working despite coughing up blood on set due to leukaemia | Malayalam News

Although Malayalam cinema has produced several talented actors over the decades, with many among them ranking as India’s finest of all time, if you ask industry professionals or the audience who they believe the absolute GOATs may be, they will have only a few answers. In such lists, you must have come across this name too — Sathyan. Reverently referred to as “Sathyan Master,” he played a key role in setting a unique standard for screen acting in Malayalam. At a time when most artistes across the country adhered to a highly dramatised performance style influenced by theatres, Sathyan was one of the first to embrace, master, and refine the realistic acting style, which many later aspirants adopted. It even became a salient feature of Malayalam cinema. In a way, it can be said that Sathyan walked so that his successors, including Mohanlal and Mammootty, could run. Born on November 9, 1912, as Cheruvilakathu Veetil Manuel Sathyanesan Nadar, he explored several professions before eventually transitioning to acting. According to The Hindu, he worked as a …
