Over 700 films in 60 years: Kaviyoor Ponnamma played mother to over 100 actors, many double her age | Malayalam News

Yes, Malayalam cinema is acclaimed for the spectacular movies it creates, constantly experimenting with content and form, pushing the boundaries of the visual art while defying the rules set by the mainstream market. But there’s one thing the industry is renowned for more than its films: the impressive array of actors it has, who predominantly take on supporting and character roles. Malayalam cinema’s list of great actors extends well beyond the leading men and women to include a diverse group of character actors, who rank among the finest in Indian cinema. From Thilakan, Nedumudi Venu, Sukumari, Kalpana, KPAC Lalitha, and Vijayaraghavan, to Oduvil Unnikrishnan, Bindu Panicker, Innocent, Jagadish, Sankaradi, Mammukkoya, Meena, and Pauly Valsan, there are countless artistes who have impressed us with their iconic performances in supporting roles. Among them, Kaviyoor Ponnamma stands out as one of the tallest figures. A four-time recipient of the now-discontinued Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actress — the most by any artiste, a record she shares with Sukumari and KPAC Lalitha — Ponnamma was best known …

Fahadh Faasil was paid Rs 4 lakh, 1.6% of film’s budget, for 22 Female Kottayam that changed his career | Malayalam News

Fahadh Faasil’s cinematic journey pretty much sums up what Shah Rukh Khan told us in Om Shanti Om (2007): “Agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaho, toh puri kainaat usse tumse milane ki koshish mein lag jaati hai (If you want something with all your heart, the whole universe conspires to bring it to you).” Despite a flop debut, he currently ranks among the most talented actors of his generation in the country, much to everyone’s surprise. However, that didn’t happen overnight; it has been a work in progress ever since the start of his second innings in 2009, seven years after his debut. Malayalam cinema and nepotism No matter which film family they hail from or which superstar’s child they are, if one doesn’t possess the necessary acting skills and manage to impress the audience with them, they don’t stand a chance in Malayalam cinema. Interestingly, this isn’t a new phenomenon; it’s been the case for the longest time, which is why some of the biggest star kids never made it big in the …

Kani Kusruti tells Bollywood filmmakers ‘please don’t cast me’ because of her language constraint: ‘Don’t think I can learn Hindi that fast’ | Bollywood News

After her global breakthrough with Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light a couple of years ago, Kani Kusruti has now made inroads into Hindi cinema with Anubhav Sinha’s courtroom drama Assi. She plays Parima, a rape survivor in New Delhi seeking justice against her perpetrators in a local court, being represented by a driven lawyer Raavi (Taapsee Pannu). In an exclusive interview with SCREEN, the actor discusses her language constraint, change in women’s safety on Malayalam film sets, and her take on vigilante/saviour/revenge sagas. You’ve previously said you’ve been approached inappropriately at workplace. Have the film sets become safer after the formation of the WCC (Women in Cinema Collective) in Kerala? I’m seeing a change in Kerala at least. Fifteen years ago, if I’d go to a Malayalam film set, you’d mostly have other female actors as the only other women. Compared to Kerala, whenever I come to Mumbai, there are more women present on set. That already changes the workplace nature. In Kerala, you’d see barely one female assistant director, that too only …

This is the reality we all know, we know the people who have been accused, we can see so many of them thriving. A lot of that is actually dependent on us, on all of us as a society, who we choose to work with, whose work we want to watch, how many opportunities do we give these people.” Speaking about the Hema Committee report, she went on to add, “The Hema committee has brought out a report, how many people have actually read it, how widely has it been circulated? Why everybody loves a good chaos? From Priyadarshan and LJP’s movies to Pennum Porattum, unpacking the ‘ridiculous’ charm of chaotic comedy | Malayalam News

“Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot,” goes a well-known quote often attributed to Charlie Chaplin. There’s a Malayalam saying that captures the same spirit and reflects a similar idea: “Aaraante ammakku bhraanthu pidichal kaanan nalla chelaa,” which can be roughly translated as, “It’s all amusing and entertaining as long as the tragedy is someone else’s.” Actor Rajesh Madhavan’s directorial debut, Pennum Porattum (Girl and the Fools Parade), which hit the screens recently, embodies this adage. But what makes the movie even more impactful is its use of absurdism and chaotic comedy to address significant topics, giving it far more weight than a mere dramatic treatment could. In a way, it can be said that Pennum Porattum attests to American historian Henry Adams’ words: “Chaos was the law of nature; order was the dream of man.” The absurd comedy argues that no matter how hard people try to maintain order and walk in a straight line like ants, they revert to chaos at the first opportunity, and that their …
