Indian campaign ends as Satwik-Chirag bow out in the semi-final

India’s no.1 men’s doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffered a semi-final exit at the Malaysia Open 2025 in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday. They were the only seeded pair left in the men’s doubles category in the competition. The duo lost their semi-final match in a straight game (10-21, 15-21) affair to the South Korean pairing of Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae. A Clinical all-round play from the Koreans Satwik and Chirag had no answers to the exceptional net play of the Korean pairing, especially Seo’s precise placements on the sidelines troubled the aggressive play of the Indian players. “They were playing well and we saw them playing well in this tournament, we were prepared but things didn’t go as planned and today was very slow compared to the last three days’ shuttles,” Satwik said in the mixed zone. “It’s good learning for us and they were playing very well, it’s a bit disappointing but yes we have the tournaments to play,” Satwik added. Indian pair had a better start to …

We want to still go as deep in the tournament as possible,” Chirag Shetty said after their win. “As athletes, these are the kind of stadiums you want to play in. Satwik and Chirag advance to the last eight

Indian stalwart doubles duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2025 Malaysia Open, at the Axiata Arena on Thursday. The pair defeated Malaysian doubles pair Ayub Azriyn and Tan Wee Kiong in straight sets 21-15, 21-15 in just under 45 minutes and have made it to the final eight. Outside of this result, it has been a very disappointing day for India, as every other India competing suffered defeats and exited the tournament, including HS Prannoy and women’s doubles pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand. Satwik and Chirag have met these opponents previously in the 2024 Thailand Open, with the Indians winning that match in straight sets as well, and in quite a similar fashion, there was hardly a fuss in which ‘SatChi’ went about proceedings today, winning rather comfortably. ‘Looking to go as deep into the tournament as possible’ Speaking to the reporters after the match, Chirag said “Really feels good (to win). Happy to be back on court. It’s been a good start to the year, and we’re …

Treesa-Gayatri advance, Lakshya Sen loses in first round

The Indian women’s doubles pairing of Teresa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand advanced to the second round of the 2025 Malaysia Open on Tuesday. Lakshya Sen, however, suffered a first-round exit, losing to Chi Yu Jen. However, the day’s highlight goes to a roof leakage that caused water damage to Court 3 of Axiata Arena during HS Prannoy’s match against Brian Yang, causing a lot of time loss and resulting in the rescheduling of fixtures. Prannoy’s match will resume on Wednesday. Winning start for Treesa and Gayatri After a rather memorable finish to their campaign in 2024, Treesa and Gayatri started 2025 on a positive note, winning their first-round match against Thailand’s Ornnicha Jongsathapornparn and Sukitta Suwachai in straight games. The Indian duo started off on the front foot, quickly establishing a lead, and they never looked back. They won the first game 21-10 and in the second game, the same scenario unfolded, with the Indians winning it 21-10 and sealing the game in just 30 minutes. Disappointment from Lakshya Sen Lakshya Sen started off his …

Stadium roof leaks as Prannoy match stopped in Malaysia | Badminton News

In bizarre scenes at the Malaysia Open Super 1000, first-round matches on Court 2 and Court 3 were halted after splotches of water drops fell from the roof at the Kuala Lumpur venue of the year’s first big badminton event. One of the matches to be affected involved HS Prannoy who saw water pooling up on his left front court near the net on Court 3. The Indian was leading Canadian Brian Yang 21-12, 6-3 in the second set at that stage. Earlier there had been problems when Yang played on the farther side too, but courtside officials had mopped up the court. However, in the second set, Prannoy gestured to the chair umpire that the court had gotten risky as larger splotches formed on the court, typically where a right handed would play his backhand lunge. Coach Gurusaidutt also warned the player of the risk. The referee arrived on the court soon after and both players left the court after 25 minutes. Two other organising members inspected the leak but play was still held …
