Zohran Mamdani’s inauguration: A playlist of many Americas with a Sikh rapper signing off | Music News

On a freezing New Year’s morning in New York, after 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as the 112th mayor of the city with one hand on the Quran held by artist and wife Ruwa Duwaji, he walked away to the music of Sikh rapper Babbu Singh aka Babbulicious. As confetti cascaded everywhere outside the City Hall, Brampton-based Singh, in a bright pink turban, flipped the lyrics of his famous song ‘Brampton vich munda rainda (Gaddi Red Challenger)’ (The boy lives in Brampton) and subbed it with New York neighbourhoods – Manhattan, Bronx, Harlem, Stanten Island – weaving the names of these into his verses as spaces where Mamdani belongs. New York vich munda rainda, Bronx vich munda rainda, Manhatten vich munda rainda… it went on (The boy lives in New York/ the boy lives in Bronx/ the boy lives in Manhattan) As the beat pulsed through, Mamdani stood on the side, singing along, grinning and applauding as the crowd roared. It was playful and carried New York within it all, a space where people …

The torch of American progressive history is being passed to a new generation: Corey Robin on Mamdani’s victory

The torch of American progressive history is being passed to a new generation: Corey Robin on Mamdani’s victory

Zohran Mamdani’s election this week as New York City’s Mayor is a story that has travelled far beyond the city’s five boroughs. Noted political theorist Corey Robin — Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Brooklyn College and the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center — unpacks what Mamdani’s victory means for the Democratic Party establishment, U.S. politics in the Trump era, and progressive movements beyond America. What is the most striking aspect of Mamdani’s victory? The most significant aspect is that it has been built for over a decade, going back to the early 2010s, with the rise of Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), which had been a moribund organisation, but got a new lease of life after Occupy [Wall Street] and the [2008] financial crisis. There has been a tremendous amount of grassroots organising, and Mamdani comes out of that group — a small group that by poll day, had over 1,00,000 volunteers canvassing door-to-door for him. So, it is a real triumph of a kind of democratic action that we have …

Mamdani’s win, other U.S. results may mark Indian diaspora vote shifting back from Trump: Expert

Mamdani’s win, other U.S. results may mark Indian diaspora vote shifting back from Trump: Expert

The U.S. election win of Zohran Mamdani and other Indian-American candidates may mark a return of votes from some of the diaspora, especially young men, who had shifted their support to U.S. President Donald Trump and the Republican Party in 2024, says Milan Vaishnav. Dr. Vaishnav — the Director of the South Asia Programme at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace — has surveyed Indian-American attitudes through a number of recent U.S. elections and published papers on the subject, and says the shift may also be a backlash to anti-immigrant campaigns by Republican/Make America Great Again (MAGA) supporters. What does the “Mamdani moment” mean for the Indian diaspora? Just a year ago he polled just about 1% among voters, and now he is the first Indian-American Mayor of New York? Yes, you’re right. A year ago, he was polling at 1% and only very hard core political observers would have heard his name, and if they had, it was because of his famous parents, the Film Director Mira Nair and the academic Mahmood Mamdani. And to …
