A Kerala court on Wednesday granted bail to expelled Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil in the third sexual assault case against him, in which he was arrested earlier this month.  The bail was granted by the Pathanamthitta District Sessions Court, which was considering an appeal filed by him against a judicial magistrate’s court that had denied him relief, stating that the allegations against him were serious.  The third sexual assault case was registered against the Palakkad MLA following a complaint lodged by a woman from Kottayam district on 8 January. Nazeera, on Wednesday (December 10, 2025) granted Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil anticipatory bail in the case concerning the alleged rape of a young woman after “inviting her to a homestay at Adoor in Pathanamthitta district to discuss marriage in 2023”. This is the second rape case filed against the MLA. The court directed Mr. Mamkootathil to present himself before the investigating officer, K. Sajeevan, at the State Police Crime Branch office at Kowdiar in Thiruvananthapuram and cooperate with the probe. The court also required Mr. Mamkootathil to surrender his passport to the investigating office and not leave the country without the jurisdictional magistrate’s permission.  Moreover, he must authenticate his presence in the country by presenting himself before the investigating office every Monday until further notice. Poonguzhali, to supervise the Crime Branch team investigating the second rape case filed against Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil.  Officials said the move assumes significance against the backdrop of the possibility of more comparable “me-too” disclosures surfacing in the public domain against him.  They noted that Ms. Poonguzhali has considerable experience as the nodal officer for victims who testified before the 2017 Justice Hema Committee, which recorded allegations of sexual favours for film roles and gender inequality and entrenched misogyny in the Malayalam film industry. Mamkootathil faces increased legal jeopardy as CB registers a second rape case

  Palakkad MLA, Rahul Mamkootathil appeared to face increased legal jeopardy late Wednesday with the police registering a First Information Statement (FIR) based on a second rape complaint against the legislator. Officials said the police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under Dy.SP. Sajeevan to probe the case. Thiruvananthapuram City Police Commissioner, Thomson Jose, will supervise the investigation.  The second investigation comes against the legal backdrop of Mr Mamkootathil moving the Principal Sessions Court, Thiruvananthapuram, for anticipatory bail in a comparable case registered by the Nemom police last Thursday. Notably, the court has posted the case for further hearing on Thursday.  Officials said police traced the email to its sender, who identified herself as a 23-year-old non-resident Keralite.
