Indian Railways ramps up Onam travel with 112 special train services

Indian Railways has announced 112 special train trips for the upcoming Onam festival season to accommodate the expected rise in passenger demand, significantly increasing the number of festive services compared to last year. The special trains will operate between August 14 and September 6, connecting Kerala with several major cities across the country and providing additional travel options for passengers returning home for the celebrations. According to an official statement, Southern Railway will operate 54 of the 112 special services, while the remaining 58 trips will be run by other railway zones.  The additional trains have been introduced to reduce waiting lists, ease congestion on popular routes and ensure smoother travel during one of Kerala’s busiest travel seasons. Heavy rain triggers landslide in Mangaluru; three killed, three others injured

Three members of a family, including two young girls, lost their lives after a rain-triggered landslide destroyed their house in Mangaluru early on Wednesday. Three other family members were rescued from the debris and are undergoing treatment in hospital, as per PTI. The incident took place behind the Kankanady Police Station in the Nagori area after heavy overnight rainfall caused a section of a nearby hill to collapse, burying the house under a large mound of soil.  Rescue teams race against time Six members of the family were trapped when the house collapsed. Local residents were the first to rush to the spot, followed by personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), who carried out rescue operations, reported the news agency. Three people were pulled out alive and shifted to a nearby hospital. The victims who died in the incident have been identified as Shanta (46), her eight-year-old daughter Anamika Chaurasia, and four-year-old daughter Pari. Moreover, these products have failed to reach people and food processors for commercial production, he said. The mela has been organised by Raita Kudla Pratisthana, Siri Totagarike Sangha and Savayava Krushika Grahaka Balaga of Mangaluru. 2022 Mangaluru cooker blast case: Accused sentenced to 10 years in jail

A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Bengaluru has sentenced Mohammed Shariq to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in connection with the 2022 Mangaluru cooker blast case, reported the IANS. The verdict was delivered on Monday after the accused pleaded guilty during the trial. Shariq was charged under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), including Sections 121A, 122 and 326. The court stated that the period he has already spent in custody will be set off against the total sentence.He had initially pleaded not guilty in 2024 but later changed his plea in December 2025 under Section 229 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Second accused faces trial The second accused, Syed Yasin, has pleaded not guilty. The trial against him will continue. Both accused were produced before the court via video conference from prison, according to the IANS. The incident took place on November 19, 2022 near Kankanady in Mangaluru. Parameshwara said he has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) of Karnataka to submit a detailed report on allegations of harassment made by an inspector of Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement (DCRE), and a separate letter written by a Superintendent of Police against the Mangaluru City Police Commissioner. Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru on April 21, Dr. Parameshwara said he had taken note of media reports regarding the issue. The DCRE Inspector, identified as Srinivas, has levelled serious allegations while SP Kashinath has written to the DGP highlighting his concerns. Sulaiman alias Sameer is an accused in the gang rape of a medical student in Deralakatte in December 2013. He is also accused in the case of assault of Assistant Sub Inspector Aithappa reported in Urwa Police Station limits in 2017. Police had arrested Sulaiman, Samshuddin and Safwan in the gang rape case. Following failure to appear before the court, a proclamation warrant against Sulaiman was issued by the 6th Additional District and Sessions Court, Mangaluru.  He is said to have moved to Saudi Arabia. A Russian oil-laden tanker, MT Aqua Titan, chartered by Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL), has arrived in India on Sunday amid growing concerns over global energy supply due to the escalating conflict in West Asia, reported ANI. The tanker is currently anchored in the Arabian Sea, about 10 nautical miles off the Mangaluru coast. The tanker was expected to arrive in India on Saturday. Its arrival comes at a time when global energy markets remain volatile, with supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions impacting crude and energy availability. Earlier in the day, a cargo ship carrying Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) from Texas, United States, arrived at the New Mangalore Port in Mangaluru. He added that Karnataka’s forest administration is among the most proactive in the country in dealing with wildlife-related challenges. “The priority is to prevent conflict between humans and wild animals. Wherever animals are present near habitations, we have drawn up plans to ensure their safety as well as the safety of residents,” the state forest minister said.
