New Delhi: Suspected Kuki militants fired several rounds towards a temple of the Meitei community in Manipur’s Imphal East district today, police sources said. The attack came on a day Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla extended the one-week deadline for people from all communities to deposit looted and illegally held weapons till March 6. The previous deadline ended today. The firing came from the hilltops in adjoining Kangpokpi while some members of the Meitei community were praying at the Kongba Maru temple, sources said. No one was injured, they said. Following the attack at the temple some 22 km from the state capital Imphal, a joint team of the police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) combed the nearby hills, residents from nearby villages who went to the temple told reporters. President’s Rule was imposed in violence-hit Manipur on February 13 following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. Representatives of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) met Governor Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan in the state capital Imphal, and submitted a 13-point memorandum that detailed steps the Governor may consider to bring peace to Manipur. “It is evident that in the ongoing law and order crisis in Manipur, the Meetei group has no specific agenda or objective in engaging with this conflict. A senior Manipur Home Department officer said that after the threadbare discussion in the meeting, it was mutually agreed that a proposal would be presented by the representatives of the state government in the next round of tripartite meetings, scheduled in April. They cited two flash messages sent by Kangpokpi district Superintendent of Police (SP) Manoj Prabhakar – a month apart – to all officers in charge of police stations and outposts in the district, asking them not to give in to demands for money by “unlawful groups” and not to attend a meeting of “all police personnel of Kangpokpi district” called by a Kangpokpi-based Kuki group.
