Two Assam Rifles personnel were killed on Monday in an ambush carried out by unknown armed persons in Manipur’s Ukhrul distict, officials said. The deceased were identified as warrant officer Balwant Singh and Rifleman CM Singh. A 56-year-old Kuki woman and her daughter were wounded in a fresh gunfight between two armed groups in ethnic violence-hit Manipur’s Kangpokpi district even as at least three houses were set afire in a separate incident on Sunday. Kuki-Inpi Manipur, a civil body, condemned the attack as barbaric and cowardly. It blamed Naga insurgent groups, the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah), or NSCN-IM, and the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF), for the attack. Officials said Kuki National Front-Presidential faction (KNF-P) and Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA), both Kuki outfits, which have signed a suspension of operations pact with the government, were involved in the gunfight. The police said the attack happened around 11.30 am in the Kuki-dominated village. According to the police, a group of armed miscreants opened fire towards some farmers working in a paddy field along the Imphal-Tamenglong road. Haogin Louvum, 55, was killed in the attack. A case has been registered and investigation is underway, said the police. The incident was reported on the day 14 Kuki men, who had been held captive by Naga groups since May 13, were released. The 14 men had been abducted following a twin ambush at Kangpokpi and Noney districts, killing four persons including three church leaders and one Naga man.
