A 53-year-old man was shot dead by some armed men while he was working on a paddy field in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Saturday (July 11, 2026) evening, officials said. Haolal Singsit, a resident of Govajang village in the Kuki-majority district, died on the spot, while his wife, Nemneikim Singsit, escaped unhurt. Villagers told officials that they heard around 20 rounds of gunfire around 4 p.m. on Saturday (July 11). Security forces rushed to the area, and the body has been recovered. Manipur’s trail of violence widened after an armed group attacked and torched a Kuki village in Noney district at around 5 a.m. on Thursday (July 2, 2026). The Kuki Inpi (apex body) of Jiribam, Tamenglong, and Noney districts alleged that suspected members of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN) carried out an “unprovoked” pre-dawn attack on Leikot Kuki village, reducing it to ashes. The NSCN is also known as the Isak-Muivah faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland, one of the oldest extremist groups in the northeastern region. The Kuki Inpi said the village volunteers, armed with licensed single-barrel firearms and limited resources, tried to defend the village but were overwhelmed by the attackers who used automatic rifles and mortar shells. Security forces fired several rounds of tear gas shells to disperse protestors who had blocked National Highway 202 in Manipur`s Ukhrul district on Friday, officials told news agency PTI.  Residents of Shangkai village, who were enforcing a shutdown in their area to protest the alleged holding of 14 community members hostage by Naga groups, had blocked part of the vital highway from Imphal to Ukhrul district headquarters. A 19-year-old woman was injured by gunfire between two armed groups in Ukhrul, Manipur on Monday while she was working in a paddy field, police said, adding that the gunfight erupted around 1pm and lasted till around 6.50pm. Security outside the residence of Henlianthang Thanglet, the chairman of the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC), in Churachandpur on Monday.
