Manisha Bhanwala wins her first Asian title

Indian women wrestlers had mixed results on the fourth day of the 2025 Asian Wrestling Championships, as Manisha Bhanwala won the nation’s first gold medal while Antim settled for bronze in Amman, Jordan, on Friday. Three-time Asian medalist Manisha Bhanwala reached the final of the women’s 62 kg for the first time and took that all the way to clinch her maiden continental gold against Kim Ok-Ju of North Korea. Maiden Asian title for Manisha In the final, Manisha started with an early attack to win a take down and gain a narrow lead at the half time. Meanwhile, Kim bounced back in the second round to take a good lead using a couple of shoulder turns. Manisha didn’t lose her hope and made a brilliant comeback to win two back-to-back take downs in the final minute and clinched the title, edging past Kim by 8-7. Mansi Ahlawat clinched India’s first medal at the Senior World Championships 2024 by winning a bronze medal in women’s 59 Kg freestyle wrestling at Tirana, Albania on Wednesday. With this, she has now won a medal at the world championships of all the age group categories: Senior (Bronze 2024), U23 (Bronze 2022), U20 (Bronze 2018), and U17 (Silver 2016). She confirmed her maiden senior world medal with a solid 5-0 victory against Pan-American champion, Laurence Beauregard of Canada in the bronze medal match. Mansi has been a very consistent wrestler for India and was very close to winning a medal at the Asian Games, but eventually lost her bronze medal match. She also represented India at the Olympic qualifier earlier this year. Young Indian wrestlers aim to make their mark at World Wrestling C’ships

A 12-member Indian contingent will compete in the World Wrestling Championships, set to take place in Tirana, Albania from October 28 to 31. This year’s World Championships will feature only 12 weight classes across three disciplines, accommodating all the non-Olympic categories as the wrestlers from other categories competed at the Paris Olympics 2024. India has sent a relatively less experienced and young squad to the event. But, the youngsters will be hopeful of putting up an impressive show as they have done in the last five editions of the World Championships. Last year, with the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) suspended, India competed under the flag of United World Wrestling (UWW), the global governing body of the sport. Antim Panghal (53kg) was the only Indian wrestler to win a medal at the event. Sarita Mor will lead young Indian squad

Sarita Mor, the two-time Asian champion will spearhead the young Indian wrestling contingent at the Asian Wrestling Championships in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, scheduled to be held from April 11 to 16. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) announced a 30-member squad for these championships after the selection trials in Sonipat and Patiala last month. This is the B Indian team as the main players are training for next week’s Olympic Qualifiers at the same venue. The competition will kickstart with the men’s freestyle category for the first two days. Anirudh Gulia is the only wrestler from India in the men’s freestyle category who has a medal in the previous edition. Young wrestlers like Udit and Rohit will be the ones to watch out for at these championships. Udit qualified for the event after an upset win over Olympic medalist Ravi Dahiya while Rohit knocked out Bajrang Punia at the selection trials.
