The doctor, hailing from Beed district, was found dead in a hotel room in Phaltan on October 23. In a note scribed on her palm, she alleged that sub inspector Gopal Badane raped her on multiple occasions, while Prashant Bankar, a software engineer, mentally harassed her. Both have been arrested. Mr. Jarange met her family in Kavadgaon in Wadwani tehsil and assured them of his support in their fight for justice. He spoke to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam over phone and also got them to interact with the doctor’s kin. Jarange said he would approach a different strategy in the ongoing battle for Maratha reservation under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. He along with 104 activists, including women, had launched the hunger strike on January 25, to demand reservations for the Maratha community. While the demand for quota remains at the forefront of his movement, Jarange has also raised his voice for justice in the brutal murder of Santosh Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district. Deshmukh was abducted, tortured, and killed on December 9, 2024. Jarange has demanded capital punishment for those responsible, further intensifying the pressure on authorities. “I have decided to withdraw fast on Thursday as I have decided to adopt a different strategy moving forward. Activist Manoj Jarange on Monday announced plans for a fresh indefinite hunger strike to demand reservation for the Maratha community in jobs and education under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. Speaking to the media, 42-year-old Jarange said he would reveal the date for his hunger strike on Tuesday. He also invited members of the Maratha community to join his protest. The announcement coincides with the BJP-led Mahayuti government’s efforts to stabilise following its cabinet expansion on December 15.  He emphasised the fast would be open to all Maratha community members, but clarified there was no compulsion in participating in the hunger strike, part of a wider state-wide quota agitation spearheaded by him. “Anyone from the community who is willing to join the fast is welcome. Bombay High Court said the Maharashtra government had powers to maintain law and order Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Monday said the Maharashtra government cannot remain a mute spectator amid the Maratha quota protests and had powers to maintain law and order. A division bench of Justices A S Gadkari and Shyam Chandak said the government does not require orders from the court to control the situation. The bench was hearing a petition filed by Gunaratan Sadavarte against the protests initiated by Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange. Last week, Jarange’s advocate V M Thorat had assured the court they were carrying out a peaceful agitation. On Monday, Sadavarte told the bench the agitation had turned violent in many places across the state. Advocate General Birendra Saraf and public prosecutor Hiten Venegaonkar, appearing for the government, told the court 267 cases had been registered across Maharashtra following instances of violence.
