Ecuador stun Germany 2-1 to reach World Cup knockouts for first time since 2006

Germany arrived at MetLife Stadium having already topped Group E. Ecuador arrived needing a win or an early flight home. That much was clear before kickoff. What followed was less predictable. It was only the second time in five World Cup appearances that Ecuador have reached the knockout rounds. The first was 2006. The three tournaments in between — 2002, 2014, 2022 — all ended in the group stage. This one nearly did too. The loss to Ivory Coast was a gut punch. Curacao was the one that truly stung. Fifteen attempts on goal, each denied by Eloy Room. No team had registered that many shots without scoring at a World Cup since 1966. They went into the Germany game having spent 242 minutes at this tournament without a goal. Neuer heads to his fifth, feet first

Neuer heads to his fifth, feet first

Mumbai: In Germany’s footballing folklore, a new word entered the tales over a decade ago. Reklamier-Arm: Arm of Objection. A term created for Manuel Neuer. Germany’s goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (AFP) Through the course of his 22-year professional career, the goalkeeper has a habit of raising his arm in protest as soon as the ball crosses into his own net. The Arm of Objection is raised in the hope the referee will spot the opponent being a hair’s length-offside, notice the unnoticeable hint of a handball, blow the whistle for an imaginary foul… anything that would disallow the goal. Reklamier-Arm is unappealing to the German public. But what endears Neuer is his goalkeeping prowess that has made him one of the most iconic players in that position. And in June, the 40-year-old will don the Germany No.1 jersey in a fifth consecutive World Cup. This, just two years after he had announced his international retirement and four years after he recovered from skin cancer. Four-time champions Germany travel to North America looking to exorcise the ghosts …

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer suffers calf tear while celebrating goal

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is set for a spell watching from the sidelines after he was injured while celebrating a goal during Wednesday’s Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen. The 38-year-old Neuer tore a muscle fiber in his right calf, Bayern said on Thursday. Neuer “will be out for the time being,” the club added. The goalkeeper had to go off in the 58th minute of Bayern’s 3-0 win in the first leg of the Champions League last 16 tie. He had just tried celebrating Jamal Musiala’s goal – Bayern’s second on the night – when he pulled up in discomfort. Story continues below this ad “Manu wanted to run – and then his calf went. He’d already said he was getting old,” teammate Joshua Kimmich joked. The 21-year-old Jonas Urbig, a winter signing from Cologne, went on in Neuer’s place for his Bayern debut. Urbig will likely make his Bundesliga debut on Saturday when Bayern hosts Bochum. It was the second time this season that Neuer was unable to finish a game against …
