Manav advances to the main draw; Manush, Sathiyan exit

Indian paddler Manav Thakkar booked his spot in the main draw of the Singapore Smash, the first Grand Smash event of the year, at Singapore Sports Hub on Saturday. He was the only men’s singles player to register a win in the final qualifying round as both Manush Shah and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran had a disappointing end to their campaign. Manav will now join India’s No 1 Sharath Kamal as the second Indian player in the main draw of the men’s singles category. Sharath, because of his rankings, had a direct spot in the main draw of the event. The 24-year-old Manav showed his class and dominated the final qualifying round clash against Cheng-Ting Liao of Chinese Taipei to clinch a straight-game 3-0 (11-4, 11-5, 13-11) win to qualify for the main draw. Liao forced a deuce in the third game of the match but couldn’t finish it and gave away an easy victory to Manav. The young Indian will now take on Koen Pang of Singapore in the first round tomorrow. On the other hand, …

Manush Shah’s path to his first senior Nationals Title

Manush Shah’s path to his first senior Nationals Title

Surat: Manush Shah is a no-nonsense guy with a paddle in his hand. It was no different on Sunday as he clinched his first-ever men’s singles title at the 86th Senior National Championships. Shah, up against a young Payas Jain, was hyper-focused. He had two championship points in the fifth game, yet called a time-out even with an empty seat in the coach’s corner. “I felt I was rushing a bit at 10-7 [the point which he lost],” said Manush to The Bridge after the win. “I wanted to calm myself down. “We were approaching the end of the match, so I wanted some solid plan to be executed because I was going to serve,” he added. There were barely any emotions on display during the final as he raced to a 10-12, 11-6, 11-6, 12-10, 11-8 win. As soon as Manush landed his final shot right after the time out – a forehand backing away to the right to catch Payas by surprise – he raised both his arms. A roar followed two seconds …

Table Tennis: Manav Thakkar, ranked 60, scalps World No 14 Korean Jang Woojin; Manush Shah blanks World No. 23 | Sport-others News

India’s World No. 60 Manav Thakkar got his first-ever top-15 scalp, beating Korea’s top-ranked player and World No. 14 Jang Woojin 3-2 (5-11,11-9,5-11,11-9,11-7) in their men’s singles Rd of 32 clash of Asian Championship on Saturday. In what was a stunning display of backhand attack, Manav didn’t allow Woojin to settle into the match after the Korean took the first game 5-11. The 24-year-old from Surat looked a bit nervy in the opening game but came back in stunning fashion to take the third 11-9. The Korean, who reached the semifinal of the Saudi Smash, bounced back to take the third, but that was all Manav, who is in incredible form, was going to give him. Woojin led the fourth 5-4, but Manav called for a very smart timeout and the game just changed on its head after that. Coach Massimo Costantini, who was sitting on Manav’s bench appeared to be telling the Indian to attack more on Woojin’s backhand before unleashing a forehand across the table. And that’s exactly what Manav did. He kept …
