DEEPAK The four-day (April 24–27) global ‘City Nature Challenge 2026′ commenced on Friday, with participants from across cities documenting urban biodiversity. Due to prevailing heat conditions, activity remained modest on the opening day. Describing the initiative, Vivek Rathod, a naturalist from Visakhapatnam, said: “The event brings together cities worldwide in a “friendly competition” to record and observe as many species as possible in public spaces such as parks, resorts, and wildlife habitats. “Participants photograph flora and fauna and upload them on the iNaturalist platform, which automatically records location, date and time. Even if one does not know the species, the platform helps identify it,” he said. RGI orders village-wise mapping of vulnerable areas to ensure fair Census| India News

New Delhi, The Registrar General of India has directed district magistrates and municipal commissioners to identify villages, habitations and communities vulnerable to threats or intimidation that could hamper the free conduct of the Census and carry out vulnerability mapping. RGI orders village-wise mapping of vulnerable areas to ensure fair Census The RGI took cognisance of the possibility that some areas could be left out of the Census due to inaccessibility or prevailing socio-economic realities. It has asked officials to conduct a revenue village-wise exercise to “identify the villages/hamlets/habitats and segments of people vulnerable to any threat, intimidation or interference” with the free conduct of the Census. The RGI also directed that special areas such as military installations will not be covered during the ongoing housing census. A pan-India helpline number 1855 has also been launched for the Census. “The Charge Officers shall do this exercise by touring their areas extensively and in consultation with the local village officials – patwaris, lekhpals, talattis and village administrative officers,” a directive issued by Registrar General of India Mrityunjay …

Special voter list mapping drive in Kalaburagi today

As part of the preparations for Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls, a special voter list mapping drive will be carried out on Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer B. Fauzia Taranum has said. In a statement issued here on Wednesday, Ms. Taranum said that the exercise involves mapping the 2025 electoral rolls with the 2022 voter list as a preliminary step towards the Special Intensive Revision planned by the Election Commission of India in April 2026. Acting on the directions of the Chief Electoral Officer of Karnataka, preparatory work is being undertaken in all the nine Assembly constituencies in the district. However, since the progress of the mapping exercise has been relatively slow in four constituencies, Jevargi, Kalaburagi Rural, Kalaburagi South and Kalaburagi North, the district administration has decided to organise a special campaign on Thursday to accelerate the process. Ms. Taranum said that Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will undertake the mapping work at all polling stations in the four Assembly constituencies during the special drive. …

Following brain mapping and psychological tests, PU professor arrested four years after wife’s murder | Chandigarh News

Four years after the murder of his wife, the Chandigarh Police on Monday arrested a Panjab University (PU) professor for his alleged involvement following forensic psychological assessments. Bharat Bhushan Goyal, a senior professor at the University Business School (UBS), PU was arrested from outside his residence on Monday morning, following the findings of the Brain Electrical Oscillation Signature (BEOS) and polygraph tests. Later in the day, he was produced before the Chandigarh court, where he was remanded in three days of police custody. Police officials said the investigation will now focus on recovering victim Seema Goyal’s missing mobile phone, the murder weapon, and determining whether any other person was present or involved at the time of the crime. According to the police, the case remained riddled with complexities from the beginning, but a combination of forensic psychological assessments, and years of scientific and circumstantial evidence paved the way for the professor’s arrest. SSP (Chandigarh Police) Kanwardeep Kaur said that the brain oscillation and polygraph tests of the accused and his daughter were conducted, in which …

BMC launches aquifer mapping project along Mithi river to enhance water supply resources | Mumbai News

Eyeing to enhance Mumbai’s water supply resources, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a pilot project along the Mithi river basin to carry out a geophysical study and mapping of groundwater levels to determine its quality and quantity. Slated to be conducted over the course of one year, the project will undertake aquifer mapping with the aim of developing new public recharge systems like borewells. The study is in line with the National Aquifer Mapping and Management (NAQUIM) programme by the Central Ground Water Board, which was initiated by the Jal Shakti Ministry in 2012 to prepare the area specific groundwater management plans. While the CGWB has been conducting its own mapping across the country over the past two years, the BMC’s pilot project is an independent study, being carried out by its environment and climate change department. The mapping project, according to officials, is aimed at making Mumbai’s existing water resources future proof in the wake of the climate crisis. NASA’s SPHEREx Telescope Begins 3D Infrared Mapping of the Universe

NASA’s SPHEREx Telescope Begins 3D Infrared Mapping of the Universe

NASA’s SPHEREx space observatory, launched on March 11, is mapping the entire sky to chart the positions of hundreds of millions of galaxies in 3D. The spacecraft began regular science operations on May 1, taking about 3,600 images per day for two years to provide new insights into the origins of the universe, galaxies, and the ingredients for life in the Milky Way. The mission is part of NASA’s suite of space-based astrophysics survey missions leading up to the launch of NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, and will play a key role in answering the big questions about the universe. Mission goals According to NASA’s official website, SPHEREx, an observatory in Earth orbit, will complete over 11,000 orbits over 25 months, circling Earth 14½ times a day. It takes images along one circular strip of the sky, and as the planet moves around the Sun, its field of view shifts. SPHEREx takes about 600 exposures per day, each capturing different wavelengths of light. When one exposure is completed, the observatory shifts position, and the …

3D Mapping Reveals 52-Foot Megaripples from Chicxulub Asteroid in Louisiana

3D Mapping Reveals 52-Foot Megaripples from Chicxulub Asteroid in Louisiana

Giant underwater ripples, formed in the wake of the asteroid impact that wiped out the nonavian dinosaurs 66 million years ago, have been identified deep beneath Louisiana’s surface. Measuring up to 52 feet high and nearly 2,000 feet apart, these megaripples provide new insights into the catastrophic tsunami triggered by the Chicxulub impact. The findings, based on advanced 3D seismic mapping, have extended the known reach of these formations far beyond previous estimates. Scientists believe these structures, buried under layers of sediment, offer crucial evidence of the intense forces unleashed during one of Earth’s most devastating events. New Findings Extend Megaripple Coverage According to the study published in Marine Geology, a team of researchers led by Gary Kinsland, a geoscientist at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, examined a 900-square-mile area of seismic data to assess the extent of the megaripples. Earlier research in 2021 had mapped a 77-square-mile section of these features, but the latest study indicates that they are far more widespread, stretching across both shallow and deeper waters. Tsunami Dynamics and Ripple …
