Forget Maradona’s ghost, England’s real Azteca problem is Mexico’s defence

Forget Maradona’s ghost, England’s real Azteca problem is Mexico’s defence

England’s landscape does not lack heterogeneity, except for mountains. On Sunday, it is precisely what they will have to climb if they are to reach the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by beating Mexico. The first is literal. The Estadio Azteca sits 2,240 metres above sea level, though quality can compensate for it. The second is historical. In their last World Cup fixture at the Azteca, England lost 2-1 to Argentina, and on that occasion the mountain was Diego Armando Maradona, his 5’5″ frame, and the hand which made him a god. It might not induce the same dread among the current crop. The third is statistical. Mexico have never lost a World Cup match at the Azteca and own a remarkable 78.65 percent win rate at the stadium. Knockout football, though, has never cared much for probabilities. And then comes the steepest climb of them all: Mexico’s defence. The conversation around Javier Aguirre’s side has revolved around teenage sensation Gilberto Mora, Julián Quiñones’ flair and Raúl Jiménez’s renaissance. Yet Aguirre’s team has …

Judge in Diego Maradona’s homicide trial in Argentina stands down amid scandal | World News

By Lucila Sigal and Lucinda Elliott Judge in Diego Maradona’s homicide trial in Argentina stands down amid scandal BUENOS AIRES – One of the three Argentine judges presiding in the trial of seven members of Diego Maradona’s medical team charged with negligent homicide in the soccer star’s 2020 death stepped down from the case on Tuesday amid accusations of ethical breaches, leaving the future of the proceedings uncertain. Judge Julieta Makintach stood down from the case after video surfaced in recent days showing her apparently being interviewed by a camera crew as part of a documentary in the corridors of the Buenos Aires courthouse and in her office. Court rules forbid such interviews involving a judge mid-trial. The trial began on March 11 in the South American country where the World Cup winner is a revered figure. The defendants have denied the charges of “simple homicide with eventual intent” in Maradona’s treatment. If convicted, they could face prison sentences of between eight and 25 years. “This is a judicial tragedy,” Fernando Burlando, a lawyer for Maradona’s …

Hamburgers ordered from Diego Maradona’s hospital room days after brain surgery | Football News

A patient’s diet right after a surgery is often highly regulated, but that didn’t seem to be the case with football legend Diego Maradona, with one claim suggesting there was an order for hamburgers right after his brain operation. Seven health professionals have been charged with medical negligence in the former Argentina captain’s death on November 25, 2020 at the age of 60. A charge of intentional homicide, if proved, carries a sentence of between 8 to 25 years in prison. “Anything was allowed inside the room. It was embarrassing what happened there. I take responsibility,” Fernando Villarejo, the director of the intensive care unit at Olivos Clinic on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, testified during the trial. Story continues below this ad However, Villarejo claimed helplessness against Maradona’s inner coterie, most prominently neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, whom he referred to as the “king and the queen”. Luque was Maradona’s personal physician for the last four years of his life, while Cosachov prescribed medication that Maradona took until the time of his …

Over four years after the death of football legend Diego Maradona, the seven healthcare professionals who treated him in his final moments are facing trial in an Argentine court. Maradona had died on November 25, 2020 due to cardiac arrest. The healthcare professionals are being prosecuted in court for negligence that led to his death at his house outside Buenos Aires.
