World champion D Gukesh’s eight challengers will have to fight it out in a luxury resort near the Mediterranean after FIDE announced that next year’s Candidates tournament will be held in the Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort near Paphos, on the south-western coast of Cyprus. The Indian chess federation AICF had shown some interest in hosting the prestigious event in India. The Women’s Candidates tournament will also be held at the same venue, with the winner of that event qualifying to challenge Ju Wenjun of China in the Women’s World Championship. FIDE announced that the tournaments will be held between March 28 and April 16, 2026. Fabiano Caruana (as 2024 FIDE Circuit topper), Anish Giri (as winner of the 2025 Grand Swiss tournament), Matthias Bluebaum (as runner-up of the 2025 Grand Swiss 2nd tournament), and Hikaru Nakamura (as the top rated player) have already secured their participation in the Candidates. Maharashtra local body elections expected in March-April 2025, says Bawankule

Maharashtra minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Wednesday said the pending elections to local bodies in the state will be held in March-April 2025 if the Supreme Court gives its decision on the OBC reservation in the first week of January, reported news agency PTI. This announcement was made during a press conference in Nagpur. Bawankule emphasised that the State Election Commission would oversee the elections, with the state government pledging full support for the process. He also said a hearing on the quota for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) is listed in the apex court in the first week of January, stated PTI. “The State Election Commission will conduct the polls and the state government will provide all the support,” the Revenue Minister said. The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) in a notice has announced that around 9,000 vacancies will be filled to recruit technicians. The notification will likely be released in February and the online application window to fill 9,000 technicians in RRB will open between March and April.  While releasing the short notice, RRB also said that it intends to conduct the computer-based exam between October and December, 2024 and the document verification process will start in February 2025.  Complete details for RRB recruitment 2024 including the selection process, exam pattern, important dates, eligibility criteria, and other details will be available on the RRB official website. To qualify for the RRB technician, candidates must have the required eligibility as stipulated for the post by the recruitment board.
