Key Takeaways on Ukraine, Iran, Migration and India

From June 15 to 17, world leaders came together in France for the G7 (Group of Seven) meeting amid rising geopolitical tensions and economic instability. The meeting focused on the Russia-Ukraine war, the tensions in West Asia, artificial intelligence (AI) and global trade disruptions.  The G7, an informal forum of leading industrialised nations, comprises Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s presence at the 52nd edition of the summit drew global attention, amid renewed efforts to bring a resolution to the Russia-Ukraine war, now in its fifth year.  India also participated in the event, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagging concerns over the safety of Indian seafarers in the Strait of Hormuz, after attacks on commercial ships by the US Navy killed three Indians. India and Australia on Monday underscored the importance of freedom of navigation, overflight and unimpeded maritime trade amid disruptions in energy supply chains following the West Asia crisis. During wide-ranging talks in New Delhi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles announced that the two countries would begin developing an MoU regarding the provision of defence articles and services as the next step. Kochi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala on Friday with the aim to boost India’s maritime trade. Modi started the visit with reviewing the operations, specially the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) mother ship docked at the port (PTI) “Until now, 75% of the country’s transshipment needs were routed through other ports in the world. India was suffering losses in revenue through it. This situation will change now. The country’s money will be useful for it. The money that used to flow outside will now bring new economic opportunities for the people of Vizhinjam and Kerala,” Modi said addressing the event. He dedicated the facility, built on a public private partnership (PPP) model, to the nation. Modi started the visit with reviewing the operations, specially the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) mother ship docked at the port, India’s first dedicated transshipment port and also the first semi-automated port, located 20 kilometres from Thiruvananthapuram. Juvenile pirates’ age to be verified A total of nine Somali pirates who were among the 35 detained by the Indian Navy last month when they rescued a Pakistani vessel in the Indian Ocean Region, have been arrested by the Mumbai police. The pirates were arrested based on complaints by those onboard the vessel and the Indian Navy. An FIR was registered and subsequently, the pirates were brought to Mumbai. They were arrested at the Yellow Gate police station on Wednesday morning. This came a day after a special court on Tuesday directed the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) to initiate an inquiry to ascertain the age of seven out of the 35 pirates, as they claim to be minors.
