India to field its largest contingent

India will once again take centre stage in global para sport as the second edition of the New Delhi World Para Athletics Grand Prix takes place from March 11-13, bringing together around 257 athletes from eight nations for a high-profile international competition in New Delhi. The event will feature athletes from India, Russia, Nepal, Bhutan, Hong Kong, Serbia, Bosnia, and Egypt, highlighting the growing international presence of para athletics in India. Team India will field the largest contingent, with approximately 219 athletes competing across multiple track-and-field events and sport classifications. India’s top para-athletes are expected to compete at the Grand Prix, including Paralympic gold medallist Mariyappan Thangavelu, Paralympic champion and world record holder Sumit Antil, and Paralympic gold medallist Praveen Kumar. Chennai: Triple Paralympic medalist Mariyappan Thangavelu revealed that he will undergo a surgical procedure to shift to a blade prosthetic for his leg. Mariyappan hopes that the surgery will help him leap even higher in high jump. The para-athlete from Tamil Nadu will undergo surgery in the coming weeks as he eyes a return to the field at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships, which will be held in New Delhi later this year. He opted out of competing at the ongoing 23rd National Para Athletics Championships here, where more than 1,400 athletes are competing across 155 events. Change in strategy Speaking to the reporters on the sidelines of the event on Tuesday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Mariyappan said, “I was supposed to take part [in the National Para-athletics meet], but I have surgery. Tamil Nadu showers cash awards on state’s Paralympics medal-winners

Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, M K Stalin felicitated the Paris Paralympics 2024 medalists from the state with cash incentives on Wednesday. There were four Paralympic medalists from Tamil Nadu, three in the sport of Para-badminton, and one from the history-making Para-athletics contingent. INR 2 Crore for Thulasimathi Among these medalists, Para-shuttler Thulasimathi Murugesan who won the silver medal in the women’s singles SU5 category received a cash price of INR 2 crore. Meanwhile, the bronze medalists, Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan (Women’s Singles SH6) and Manisha Ramadass (Women’s Singles SU5) presented with a cash price of INR 1 crore. Mariyappan Thangavelu battles fever to clinch third consecutive Paralympic medal

Mariyappan Thangavelu was looking supremely confident till the 1.85m mark in the final of the men’s high jump T63 at the Paris Paralympics. However, after the 1.85m mark, double Paralympic medalist Thangavelu struggled with his rhythm and failed to clear the 1.88m in three attempts. Nevertheless, he won his third consecutive Paralympic medal with a bronze. The T63 class is for athletes who have limb deficiencies such as amputations or missing or shortened limbs from birth in their legs. Thangavelu won gold in the 2016 Paralympic Games and silver in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. His compatriot Sharad Kumar won the silver medal in the same event bettering his brozne medal from Tokyo Paralympics. Sharad Kumar and Mariyappan Thangavelu secured silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the men’s T63 high jump, at the Paris Paralympics on Tuesday. Sharad Kumar, who previously won bronze in Tokyo, jumped to silver this time, setting a new Paralympics record in T42 category. He cleared 1.88m to set the Paralympics record and secure the medal. Sharad who had a season best of 1.85m, attempted 1.94m in his last two effrots to challenge the gold medalist Ezra Frech of the USA but fell short.
