Chennai: Triple Paralympic medalist Mariyappan Thangavelu revealed that he will undergo a surgical procedure to shift to a blade prosthetic for his leg. Mariyappan hopes that the surgery will help him leap even higher in high jump. The para-athlete from Tamil Nadu will undergo surgery in the coming weeks as he eyes a return to the field at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships, which will be held in New Delhi later this year. He opted out of competing at the ongoing 23rd National Para Athletics Championships here, where more than 1,400 athletes are competing across 155 events. Change in strategy Speaking to the reporters on the sidelines of the event on Tuesday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Mariyappan said, “I was supposed to take part [in the National Para-athletics meet], but I have surgery. I am switching to blades.” “With blades, I feel it will help me jump higher and will be supportive for better performances,” he added. Chennai: The 23rd National Para-athletics Championships is all set to begin at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium today, with the three day event set to see the stars of the para-athletics circuit go head to head against one another. Paris Olympics gold medal-winning javelin thrower Navdeep Singh will be in action today in the morning, competing in the Javelin F41 event. Similarly, three-time Paralympics medalist Mariyappan Thangavelu and two-time Paralympics gold medalist Sumit Antil will also compete today, in the men’s T63 high jump and men’s F64 Javelin events respectively. Mariyappan Thangavelu battles fever to clinch third consecutive Paralympic medal

Mariyappan Thangavelu was looking supremely confident till the 1.85m mark in the final of the men’s high jump T63 at the Paris Paralympics. However, after the 1.85m mark, double Paralympic medalist Thangavelu struggled with his rhythm and failed to clear the 1.88m in three attempts. Nevertheless, he won his third consecutive Paralympic medal with a bronze. The T63 class is for athletes who have limb deficiencies such as amputations or missing or shortened limbs from birth in their legs. Thangavelu won gold in the 2016 Paralympic Games and silver in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. His compatriot Sharad Kumar won the silver medal in the same event bettering his brozne medal from Tokyo Paralympics. Later in an interaction with the media, Thangavelu revealed that due to a fever previous night his body was not feeling right. “I was feeling good after the warm-up but my body was a little stiff throughout the event. Sharad Kumar and Mariyappan Thangavelu secured silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the men’s T63 high jump, at the Paris Paralympics on Tuesday. Sharad Kumar, who previously won bronze in Tokyo, jumped to silver this time, setting a new Paralympics record in T42 category. He cleared 1.88m to set the Paralympics record and secure the medal. Sharad who had a season best of 1.85m, attempted 1.94m in his last two effrots to challenge the gold medalist Ezra Frech of the USA but fell short. Mariyappan Thangavelu made history by becoming the first Indian athlete to win medals in three consecutive Paralympic Games. His bronze in Paris adds to the gold he won in Rio 2016 and the silver from Tokyo 2020, marking him as one of India’s most consistent para-athletes. Mariyappan cleared 1.85m to secure the bronze. Sharad won a silver medal, while Mariyappan bagged home a bronze in the high jump event. Sharad Kumar bagged a bronze in the previous Paralympic Games too and improved the colour of the medal in Paris. The reigning Paralympic Champion Sumit Antil defended his world title in the T64 category of men’s javelin throw event while Mariyappan Thangavelu won India’s first ever gold medal in high-jump at the ongoing 2024 World Para Athletics Championships at Kobe, Japan. Mariyappan, the Rio Paralympic champion, has finally added the long-awaited world title into his elite trophy cabinet. He won the gold medal in the men’s high jump (T63 category) with a season best jump of 1.88m. In doing so, he surpassed the two American favorites, Ezra Frech (1.85m) and Sam Grewe (1.82m) to claim this world title and also broke the championship record. The other two Indian jumpers Varun Bhati and Ramsinghbai Padiyar finished on 4th and 7th place respectively.
