Behind Asian markets tanking: Apple’s price hike, AI-driven chip shortage, and more | Explained News

Asian stock markets tanked as much as 6% on Friday (June 26) as Apple’s move to jack up prices of some of its product lines by as much as 20%, and the South Korean government’s proposal to tax unrealised gains on equities, weighed on sentiment for AI and chip-related stocks. South Korea’s Kospi index ended 5.8% lower on Friday, briefly triggering the 8% lower circuit midway into the session, leading to a halt in trading for the second time this week after having lost 10% on Tuesday. OpenAI files for US IPO after Anthropic as AI giants head to public markets | World News

ChatGPT maker OpenAI confidentially filed for a US initial public offering recently, the company said on Monday, joining rival Anthropic in a push toward the stock market as investors seek exposure to the artificial intelligence boom. OpenAI did not disclose the size or terms of the offering, and said a timeline has not yet been determined. “It may be a while because there are things we want to do that are likely easier as a private company,” it said in a statement. Reuters had reported that the AI giant is targeting a valuation of up to $1 trillion in a stock market debut that could come as early as September. At that valuation, OpenAI would set the stage for a trio of trillion-dollar-valuation companies debuting rapidly, which together are seen as the most consequential test of investor appetite for high-growth technology stocks in the last 10 years. Elon Musk’s SpaceX was the first off the block, filing for an IPO that would rank as the largest in history if completed, with the company pursuing a …

SEBI cracks down on Rajesh Exports, bars promoter Rajesh Mehta, bars him from stock markets

Gold refiner and jewellery manufacturer Rajesh Exports Ltd (REL) allegedly inflated its consolidated revenues by more than Rs 15 lakh crore over five years by attributing massive revenues to overseas subsidiaries, despite the subsidiary’s audited standalone financial statements showing only a fraction of those amounts, according to an interim order by Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Accordingly, SEBI  barred Rajesh Exports’ promoter and CEO Rajesh Mehta from dealing in the company’s securities, alleging large-scale misrepresentation of financial statements and diversion of funds. Rajesh Exports denied any financial irregularities, saying its revenues were correct and that there seemed to be a communication gap. West Asia crisis raises oil risks; India markets remain resilient: SEBI chief

West Asia crisis raises oil risks; India markets remain resilient: SEBI chief

Indian markets have remained resilient despite heightened volatility triggered by the ongoing West Asia crisis, though fluctuations remain within manageable limits, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) chairperson Tuhin Kanta Pandey said here on Monday. Pandey said market volatility had risen but was not beyond the capacity of investors. (Reuters) Responding to the concerns over the impact of the geopolitical turmoil in West Asia on the Indian equities market, Pandey said market volatility had risen but was not beyond the capacity of investors and institutions to navigate. “Indian markets have remained quite resilient, although volatility has increased. But it is not beyond something which markets cannot handle,” Pandey said, adding that resilient markets are capable of absorbing shocks before returning to a “normal trajectory” once uncertainties ease. However, he cautioned that the current global crisis posed significant challenges because of its widespread implications, particularly through disruptions in oil prices and supplies. “The current crisis is quite difficult in terms of the reach it has on the rest of the world. Particularly through oil. It …

Three billion people still in limbo as India, China among big Asian markets yet to seal FIFA World Cup broadcast deals | Football News

Thirty-two days before the start of the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada, as many as three billion people have no idea whether they will be able to watch the biggest single sport event on the planet in their home. FIFA still doesn’t have a broadcast deal in place for China and India, as prospective bidders continue to play hardball. The stalemate has forced a FIFA delegation – comprising secretary general Mattias Grafstrom and director of media rights Jean-Christophe Petit – to camp out in Beijing this week, trying to woo the country’s state broadcaster to buy broadcast rights to the tournament starting June 11. According to South China Morning Post (SCMP), FIFA’s original demand for US$300 million had proved to be way above the US$80 million that China Central Television (CCTV) was willing to shell out. Negotiations had reportedly stalled at the US$120 million-150 million range. Reuters had reported that in India, the Reliance-Disney joint venture proposed $20 million for the 2026 edition, which was a fraction of FIFA’s ask, as …

No IDs, no questions: acid flows freely in Delhi’s neighbourhood markets

Acid bottles for sale at a shop in New Delhi on Friday | Photo Credit: Sushil Kumar Verma At a stationery-cum-general store in south-west Delhi’s Palam Colony, when asked for the most effective and cheapest toilet cleaner, the shopkeeper sought a plastic bottle to pour the liquid into. “₹20 for 500 ml. If you need a stronger liquid, I can get it from a manufacturer based in Kapashera at a slightly higher price of ₹50 per litre,” he said . Ground visits by The Hindu across Delhi revealed that despite laws meant to regulate the sale of corrosive substances, acid remains easily accessible without ID proof or any inquiry into the purpose of purchase.
