2 min readJul 22, 2026 09:31 PM IST French-Iranian grandmaster Alireza Firouzja parried away the attacks of India’s Arjun Erigaisi in the final round to clinch the Chennai Grand Masters 2026 tournament. The contest between the two title contenders ended in a draw, despite the best efforts of Arjun, who needed a win to take the crown. He opted for a Sicilian Defence but the game ended in a 41-move stalemate. Arjun had also finished second in the inaugural edition of the tournament, where he was pipped to the post by D Gukesh. In the next two editions, he had finished third in the standings. Arjun is likely to end the month as the India No.1 and World No.9. He and R Praggnanandhaa are the only Indians now rated above 2750, with a Chess Olympiad title defence looming in two months’ time. In the only other game that could have had a significant say on the final results, Nodirbek Abdusattorov lost to GM Dmitry Andreikin in 37 moves. Meanwhile, the much-anticipated game between current world …

Chennai Grand Masters 2026: Arjun Erigaisi beats Gukesh

India’s Arjun Erigaisi pounced on world champion, D Gukesh’s errors to storm into joint lead after Round 5 of the Chennai Grand Masters 2026 on Monday. With just two rounds left to play, Erigaisi is tied with French GM Alireza Firouzja on 3.5 points while Abdusattorov is half a point behind on 3. After the fourth round ending in all draws, Abdusattorov took the attack to Indian GM Nihal Sarin with black pieces and slowly but surely tightened the noose to force his opponent to resign after 38 moves. The all-Indian clash between Erigaisi and Gukesh began with an opening move by Jeshua J, Tamil Nadu born youngster who holds the record of becoming the youngest Arena FIDE Master at the age of 7 years, 10 months and 8 days. Thereafter Erigaisi played a solid game with black and was quick to go for the kill once the world champion’s accuracy of moves dropped in the middle game. Erigaisi stayed patient and once it was clear that his pawn on the d-file was sure to …

Chennai Grand Masters: Gukesh held to a draw by Nihal Sarin in opening game | Chess News

2 min readChennaiUpdated: Jul 16, 2026 09:27 PM IST On a day of draws, French-Iranian grandmaster Alireza Firouzja was the only player to emerge from the first round of Chennai Grand Masters 2026 with a win, prevailing over young Pranesh M in 79 moves. The day’s twin ‘friendship derbies’ — the games between D Gukesh and Nihal Sarin, and Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Hans Niemann — ended in draws, as did Arjun Erigaisi’s clash with Dmitry Andreikin. It leaves Firouzja as the sole leader in the seven-round tournament. Against Sarin, the world champion, playing with white pieces, enjoyed a tiny edge out of the opening. But after 13 moves, the game had equalised even though Gukesh’s queen squatted over the h6 square eyeballing Nihal’s king on g8. Gukesh spent 20 minutes on his 17th move to fall behind by 40. By the 19th move, Gukesh’s time had ticked down to just 22 minutes while his opponent had over an hour on his clock. This left open the possibility of Gukesh wading into trouble on the clock …

At Chennai Grand Masters, another Gukesh vs Nodirbek Abdusattorov battle loading | Chess News

5 min readJul 15, 2026 10:28 PM IST Nodirbek Abdusattorov recently found himself searching for a hotel in Mahabalipuram. He was readying himself to travel to Chennai for the Chennai Grandmasters tournament that starts tomorrow. It wasn’t as if he did not have a hotel to stay in during the tournament. What Abdusattorov was searching for was a hit from nostalgia. Four years ago, Abdusattorov was at the vanguard of the young Uzbekistan chess team that travelled to India for the Chess Olympiad and upset the equally young and hungry Indian team on the way to winning the title. Abdusattorov’s own personal duel on the top board with India’s Gukesh had decided the India vs Uzbekistan contest which then led to them winning the Olympiad while India had settled for a bronze. “I have good memories with this city,” Abdusattorov told journalists after the draw ceremony for the Chennai Grandmasters on Wednesday evening. “I even checked how far away the hotel is where I stayed four years ago. I had the idea that maybe I …
