The Delhi High Court has strongly criticised the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) over its decision to declare wrestler Vinesh Phogat ineligible for domestic competitions following her maternity break. During proceedings related to Phogat’s petition challenging her exclusion from upcoming selection trials, the court questioned the federation’s departure from its earlier selection practices and observed that motherhood is celebrated across the country and should not become a ground for exclusion. The court directed the Centre to constitute an expert committee to evaluate Phogat’s case and ensure that the interests of the sport remain the priority amid ongoing disputes involving the wrestler and the federation. Phogat had approached the High Court after WFI introduced new eligibility criteria for the 2026 Asian Games selection trials scheduled later this month. Under the revised rules, only wrestlers who secured medals in competitions during 2025 and 2026 were eligible to participate. In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down a provision that restricted maternity leave for adoptive mothers to cases where the adopted child was below three months of age. The court held that such a limitation was unconstitutional and violated fundamental rights, reported news agency PTI. SC calls adoption part of reproductive autonomy A bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and R. Mahadevan observed that adoption is an integral part of reproductive autonomy and must be treated on par with biological parenthood. The court emphasised that the right to form a family is not limited to childbirth and includes adoption as an equally valid path, reported PTI. 12 weeks maternity leave for all adoptive mothers The apex court ruled that all adoptive mothers will be entitled to 12 weeks of maternity leave, irrespective of the age of the child at the time of adoption. Replying to BJP member Y.M. Satish, the Minister said the government is taking steps to ensure that requests related to maternity and childcare leave are addressed within a fixed timeframe. A policy will be formulated to ensure that applications for maternity leave are approved within 15 days of submission. Transfer choice He added that women teachers returning to duty after maternity leave can seek a transfer to a place of their choice during counselling. This facility will be available until the child completes five years. The Minister said a new category will also be introduced for maternity-related transfers.
