Narrative of scientific progress seen through narrow lens: Jaishankar at maths exhibition inaugural

United Nations, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar inaugurated an exhibition highlighting Indian civilisation’s contributions to mathematics, noting that the global narrative of scientific progress has long been viewed through a “narrow lens” and stressing the need to “right” historical distortions. Narrative of scientific progress seen through narrow lens: Jaishankar at maths exhibition inaugural The exhibition titled ‘From Shunya to Ananta – The Indian Civilization’s Contribution to Mathematics’, hosted by the Permanent Mission of India to the UN, has been organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations in collaboration with the India International Centre. “When we assemble at the United Nations, we often speak of a shared human heritage. Yet if we look at the arc of modern history, the global narrative of scientific progress has for far too long been viewed through a narrow lens, limited in time and in geography,” Jaishankar said in his remarks as he inaugurated the “historic, first-of-its-kind” mathematics exhibition at the United Nations headquarters Monday. CBSE has rolled out new reforms. (HT Photo/ Representational) In addition, Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence (CT and AI) is likely to be phased in from the 2027–28 academic session and become compulsorily assessed in board examinations from 2029, said CBSE Chairperson Rahul Singh. The changes operationalise ideas first mooted as part of the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023 and are aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It will mean that students currently enrolled in Class 9 might face a significantly revamped secondary school curriculum and board examination pattern in 2028. Why Aleksandra Goryachkina, who prioritized humanities over Maths, is Russia’s big hope to reclaim world title | Chess News

As Kateryna Lagno and Aleksandra Goryachkina line up for the Candidates 2026 in the women’s section, they will attempt to reclaim the crown a Russian last win in 2008-10 through Alexandra Kosteniuk. Two Ukrainians and three Chinese have taken the world title cycles since then, including Hou Yifan thrice. Vladimir Kramnik was the last Russian in open events to win twenty years ago in 2006-7. Aleksandra Goryachkina however is the world Rapid champion from 2025. Goryachkina had just about started liking chess at that point, but the 2019 Candidates winner has not managed to get the breakthrough that the old powerhouse restlessly desires, going down to Ju Wenjun. Sasha’s mother Larisa Matvienko had told Krasny Sever back then that the family’s move to Karpov’s Polar Chess academy had been strongly driven by the country’s keen to turn one of its prodigies into a world beater. Goryachkina was born into a chess family – her mother, a candidate master of sports, her father a FIDE master who coached at chess school. “Sasha enjoyed dancing at the …

AI ‘godfather’ Yann LeCun says maths and physics matter more than coding | Technology News

Yann Lecun, the 65-year-old NYU professor who is regarded as one of the “godfathers” of AI, has some advice for students who are looking to get in the field of artificial intelligence. “If you are a CS major and take the minimum required math courses for the typical CS curriculum, you might find yourself unable to adapt to major technological shifts,” Lecun told Business Insider. During an almost two-hour-long podcast called The Information Bottleneck on YouTube, Yann Lecun said students should focus on things with a “long shelf life” like mathematics, physics or engineering, signal processing, control theory, and optimisation. “The disciplines with the longest shelf life are usually not computer science. Physics and engineering teach you how to model reality, and that’s what intelligence is really about,” says Lecun. While universities and computer science students are trying to grapple with and adapt to generative and agentic AI, students still seem to be having trouble finding a job. The NYU professor said that he did not initially study computer science but was enrolled in electrical …
